Reviews - What do customers think about Götz von Berlichingen: Lorraine Allemagne?

A very good book  Aug 25, 2008
A very good book, at first I was sceptical about it but after I look in to it I found it amazing , good photo's very detailed reports on the status of the unit. The only down side is that the second volume is very "rare" and cost 3(approximate) time more then the first volume
Absolutely phenomenal, buy it.   Jul 16, 2008
Details, photos, information not found anywhere else, all in a superbly constructed hardcover book that'll last for ages. Unit histories don't get much better than this. Buy it, this is one you'll not regret! In the years to come, this will be a highly sought after book.
Confusing but again essential copy  Aug 2, 2007
These books cover one of the better SS units that historians have long overlooked. The contents I am not judging but my only problem is that the book has three chapters and each one is written in French, English and German. Which is very confusing as I am paying for well over half of the book that is useless to me, why not print the whole book as one copy, combining both volumes and printing them each in their perspective languages. Was it cheaper this way? Probably. Most of the photos are taken by members of the division which I usually don't mind but these aren't very interesting, plenty of shots of soldiers but little on its equipment if that's what you are looking for. Modern photos of the battlefield and actual uniforms found in the area are a nice touch.
In German, great, English poor.  Jun 10, 2006
The two volumes of Goetz von Berlichingen are excellent books for the committed historian. However, it is recommended that the reader be fluent in either French or German, or both, as the English translation is very poor. For example, frequent use of "Stubaf" is used in English, which is an abbreviation for Sturnbannfueher, but nowhere can the English reader find this out. Where the translator for not know the English word, he uses the French, thereby producing very awkward sentences. The reader must be familiar with SS ranks and their abbreviations in German, also the German words and abbreviations for German military equipment. The translator, John Lee, is apparently not familiar with the equivalent English military terms. Lastly, the photo captions are frequently mixed up and the English translationss of the captions have different meanings than the German ones. Nonetheless, the books are excellent for the serious historian of Waffen-SS units.
A window in time  Nov 22, 2005
Waffen SS division Götz von Berlichingen has long been neglected by historians, with very little literature available in english, this fine tome and the forthcoming volume II, do justice not only to the division but to the fine men who served in it. Perhaps the lone Waffen SS division to see action solely on the western front makes it's history all the more absorbing. The book is laid out in three languages, german, english and french as are all photo captions, the photos are of superb quality and in as much as I can appreciate, most have never been published before. There is an excellent visual interplay between the black and white combat photos and color photos of equipment and division memorabilia. The division story includes chapters on it's formation and structure and it's most notable encounters in 1944, I am waiting anxiously for volume II which deals with the division's final actions.

These fine fighting men have finally received their due as one the finest Waffen SS fighting formations, both feared and respected by their foes and no one can claim to have a complete Waffen SS book collection without these two fine tomes, bound to be collector's items soon. I find it fascinating that after 60 years the interest in the events revolving around wwii in europe has not waned, but on the contrary has gained new adepts, new generations who want to know what it was all about.
Men of the mettle of the Waffen SS soldiers and their leaders are simply not found in our present world where mediocrity and ineptitude permeate not only leaders but their followers. Books like these open a window in time that allows the newer generations to see things in a new perspective without the blindfold of "liberalism" and the propaganda which has labeled our Waffen SS comrades as criminals for decades. If the charges levied against them were found sustainable on the allies "courts of law", then all other soldiers, from all the armies involved were just as guilty, for these men to come to Germany "playing the saint" and acting as though they represented a higher form of justice is preposterous, to say the least. The german and axis fighting men were no different than their opponents, they were fathers, brothers, husbands, sons, they were made of skin and bones, had feelings, loved their nation and served it well (even if that same nation later turned it's back on them) and perhaps behaved far more honourably than all their opponents together.
