Item description for Tiger I on the Western Front by Jean Restayn...

The heavily armored Tiger I became the most famous German tank of World War II. The Tigers were originally intended to counter the heavy tanks of the Russian Front, and were assigned to specially created tank battalions. In 1944 Tiger units were rushed to Normandy and fought in all the major battles of the Western Front. Although they were superior to all the tanks of the Western allies, Tigers in the West faced the added danger of attack from the greatly superior British and American air forces.

Each Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS unit equipped with the Tiger I is covered in detail. Each unit's insignia and a representative vehicle with camouflage and markings is shown in color. The operational history of each unit, and in some cases individual vehicles, is described with the aid of 250 black and white photos, most of them never before published.

Reviews - What do customers think about Tiger I on the Western Front?

For modeler and More  Dec 29, 2007
I really like the way Histoire & Collection series are built. So I was not surprise by the quality of the book himself.

From Jean Restayn, I was no more surprise to see the quality of the layout, the new pictures, some really intriguing and in such a vast quantity.

The text is clear and easy to match with the image, but sometimes is to succinct compare to other pictures.

It is a reference in itself, covering a wide range of theatre in west, from even the Africa region.

I am please by the book, but it is not a reference for technical data, but more a reference for units involve in the west and quality pictures.

Excellent Photos Weakend by Poor Captions  Aug 22, 2007
The photos are well reproduced and sufficiently large on slick paper with good detail. Some of the image contrast could have been corrected in printing. Like Restayn's other works and many other French language publications translated into English, this book suffers from poor captions (e.g. translation errors, transposed platoon & individual vehicle turret numbers in misidentified photos, mislabelled SS ranks, misidentified individuals etc.). The battalion commander of the SS 101st Tiger battalion was Sturmbannfuhrer von Westerhagen. His younger brother was an NCO who also served in the battalion. The abbreviated SS ranks of Obersturmbannfuhrer, Obersturmfuhrer, and Oberscharfuhrer are among those commonly confused. Patrick Atge's authoritative work on the Tiger company and battalion of 1st SS Pz. Div. LAH and 1st SS Pz. Korps is highly recommended to supplement this volume.

Book for modelers only!  Sep 11, 2001
This book and its companion (Tiger 1 on the Eastern Front), are excellent compilations of photographs of the dreaded Tiger 1 tank (PzVI). That being said, the titles should read "A modelers guide to the Tiger 1 on the..." Overall, I enjoyed these books because you could read them in about 1 hour, and then spend the time pouring over the photos with a magnifying glass. There are some fantastic shots of the Tigers in action. Unfortunately, there is not much in the way of military information, armament details, AAR's or other. Excellent book, but I'd have been much happier if it had been about $10 cheaper.

For the true Tiger die hard, skip these and put your money towards "Tigers in Action"

A Compliment to Jean Restayn - excellent!  Jun 26, 2001
Together with the first book, Tiger 1 on the Eastern front, this book tells the story of the most feared tank of World War II- The German Tiger IE heavy tank. From the Tunisian plains to the snowfields of the Bulge, this tank crushed the ground with its heavy tracks. Jean Restayn has managed to capture the feel of the tank perfectly in this book. As a modeler, I find this book to be amongst the most coveted in my collection.
