War is hell, even when you're already dead. The vampire-mortal war nicknamed Hell ended twenty years ago, but old hatreds die hard, especially in Chi-No, Wisconsin. Many of the young vampires living in Chi-No's old inner-city are mysteriously dying the true death. Chi-No Police detectives Kilpatrick and Duvall have been assigned to the latest case. Human John Kilpatrick isn't happy about being partnered with a vampire. Master vampire Wulf Duvall isn't thrilled to be working with an ignorant human, but he'll be doing something more important than checking taverns for illegal blood whores. When a mortal makes an assassination attempt on Duvall, he suspects the Brothers of the Sun, the zealot vampire hunters who started Hell years ago. War is brewing again, but the police department seems to be covering up the truth. Even the vampire doyens of both Chi-No and Chicago don't seem to care about sucklings dying in Little Transylvania. Duvall, scarred by 300 years of betrayal, and Kilpatrick, whose black and white world has been turned upside down, race against time to discover the true power behind the conspiracy to destroy the peace that no one seems to want.

War is coming! Dec 22, 2007
Twenty years ago, all Hell broke loose in Chi-No, Wisconsin. The mortals were at war with the immortals or vampires, and with the now ex-Senator's help a peace treaty of sorts was settled between the two feuding races. Vampires were now allowed to have jobs, and do much as the humans did, except they were not permitted to carry fire arms.
Now two decades have passed and it seems the ugly head of war is resurfacing from the underground. Several vampire deaths have been discovered by Chi-No Police Department, resulting in shift changes for some of the more experienced officers. When John Kilpatrick hears the news that he will be taking on a new shift as well as a new partner, he is less than happy. To Kil, vamps were just a waste and they had no place in his world.
Wulf Duvall was a three hundred year old vampire that has lived through more than one war. He will do whatever it takes to stop the vampire deaths, even if it risks his own undead life. Teaming up with his mortal partner is a chore in itself, obviously the dislike goes both ways, but they have to suck it up and stick together or all Hell's going to break loose, literally.
The attack on Duvall from the Brothers of the Sun, was totally unexpected. Nearly killing him, Duvall did not stop searching for the reason why sucklings were dying. But with the help of a fellow vamp, Duvall discovers that in the synthetic blood sucklings were consuming, there were traces of silver nitrate mixed in. In small amounts, silver nitrate proves fatal for vamps. The new woman in his life, Veronica just happens to be the ex-Senator's daughter; could she have set him up because he was becoming to close to discovering who was behind this crime?
Half Past Hell is an extraordinary mystery filled with bits of sex, love, deceit, and conspiracy. Ms. Roycraft captures the reader's attention from the very start. There was always some kind of action going on, it is impossible to lose interest in this compelling story. 5 Hearts
No Bad Jul 25, 2007
Fairly goood police procedural concerning a vampire storyline. Character plot and development is exceeding long. There is plnety of action but it is spaced too far to be of great impact. Not one of the better summer reads.
Half Past Hell Jaye Roycraft ImaJinn, May 2007, $14.00, 242 pp. ISBN 1933417315
The humans called it Operation Storm; the vampires dubbed it Hell. It was a war between two different species began by two vampire slayers brothers who found a vampire nest in Chicago and destroyed it. They formed the organization Brothers of the Sun and went on a rampage murdering in cold blood the Sucklings, vampires under a hundred years old. It was a virtual massacre. Eventually a peace was brokered with vampires granted almost the same rights as humans event though they had to register and obey human laws. Sucklings either drink synthetic blood or take blood from a willing human.
In ChiNo Wisconsin, Wulf Duvall a master vampire who has lived for three centuries, partners with mortal police officer Kilpatrick who calls the night walkers squids. They are investigating a series of suckling deaths when the ones affected seem to be on fire internally. It turns out that someone wants Hell to start again and has found an ingenious method for making that happen. Duval and Kilpatrick have to stop the head of the plan be it human or vampire before war breaks out all over again.
HALF PAST HELL is a refreshing original, exciting, action packed vampire police procedural that is bloody terrific. Jaye Roycraft has written an innovative fangtastic vampire novel in which vampires are second class citizens and humans are the ones in power. The relationship between the two partners is delightful to watch as it turns from mistrust, with acerbic barbs thrown at each other, to a real partnership. Combining elements from horror, urban fantasy and mystery, HALF PAST HELL is special heavenly read.
