Item description for Luther's Works Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon and the Last Words of David/2 Samuel 23: 1-7 (Luthers Works - Concordia #15) by Martin Luther & Jaroslav Jan Pelikan...

Overview
This volume contains three works that exemplify and state Luther's principles of Old Testament exegesis. All three are on less familiar Old Testament texts. All of these texts have, in Luther's estimation, suffered from intolerable misapprehensions and interpretations. They stand in need of rescue from obscure translation and interpretation. The notes on Ecclesiastes (1532) admit that Ecclesiastes is one of the more difficult books of the Bible, but Luther points out that the "difficulties" arise because commentators have failed to understand the purpose of the book and have taken no intelligent approach to those strange ways of speaking called Hebraisms. He shows that Ecclesiastes does not condemn the creatures of God, it condems man's depraved affections and desires. It does not promote 'contempt of the world' nor teach that we ought 'to be in doubt about the grace and love of God toward us.' This book, Luther thinks, ought to be called Solomon's "Economics", for it teaches that 'we may with Thanksgiving use the things that are present and the creatures of God that are generously given to us . . . without anxiety about the things that are still to come'. LECTURES ON THE SONGS OF SOLOMON (1531) describe previous interpretations of the Song of Songs as 'immature and strange.' Luther thinks of this Biblical book as Solomons "Politics", for in it Solomon 'thanks God for his Divinely established kingdom, prays for the preservation and extension of this kingdom, and encourages the citizens of his realm to be of good cheer in their trials and adversities and to trust in God.' This 'encomium of the political order' is at the same time 'a common song for all states' and thus for the people of God, for Solomon's example is to give thanks to God, to acknowledge His highest benefits, and to pray for correction, should anything reprehensible befall the realm. This leads naturally to the third item, the TREATISE ON THE LAST WORDS OF DAVID (1543), for the question concerning the proper method of interpreting the Old Testament is now inescapable. Luther gives his answer at length on the basis of 1Samuel 23:1-7. He sums it up in the sentence: "Whoever does not have pr want to have this man properly and truly who is called Jesus Christ, God's Son, whom we Christians proclaim, must keep his hands off the Bible . . . Thre more he studies, the blinder and more stupid he will grow. . . "

Reviews - What do customers think about Luther's Works Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon and the Last Words of David/2 Samuel 23: 1-7?

That's Tough  Apr 16, 2008
"That's tough" was once an expression commonly heard when you were expected to put up with something disagreeable. "That's tough" is the answer that I have received thus far from Logos software and Augsburg with regard to this product. I purchased an HP computer, a few years ago already. I had already been using this product on my old computer. When I tried to install it on my new computer, it would only install a tiny portion of the program. I have communicated with both Logos and Augsburg, but they've been no help. That was many months ago. I haven't heard from them since. They haven't even bothered to find out if the problem has been resolved. I won't be buying a product like this again. You may be able to install it on your computer, but will you be able to install it on your next computer?

Assessing Luther's Works  Nov 23, 2007
Downloading program from CD to my PC hard-disk went smoothly. But when I tried to copy part of text to the clipboard, it went smoothly for the first time but if I did it second time with other selected text the program gave no response - I had to exit and then reran and repeated the process again. Also when I searched for particular word or phrase it displayed the results without showing correct page number and it bypassed footnotes. In short the search engine is not too user friendly.

Libronix CPU Library - Bible Study System  Mar 15, 2007
Since the 55 Volume set of Luther's Works sells for about $1,500, this is a great value. In addition, it can be combined with other Libronix products. I also bought AMG Bible Essentials and The Interlineal Literal Translation of the Greek New Testament. For a total expenditure of about $225, I can word study, do exegetical reviews and compare original Greek translations side by side with the KJV and the NASB Bibles. These programs all work in conjunction with each other and form a solid basis for studying Biblical scripture. You can study your Biblical teachings and sermons and be armed with the truths, including the ability to discern differences in the many Bible translations. Study Bibles today can be negatively influenced by the editors, who may be the new breed of evangelicals teachings man's doctrines instead of Gods. Read 2 Peter 3:15-16 and protect yourself against false teachings.

Nice Resource!  Mar 19, 2006
It's a nice, easy to navigate collection of Luther's Works. I like the ability to find things by heading or by volume and page numbers. The only down side is that the search function isn't very refined.

Awesome Tool, Easy Integration  May 28, 2004
I had been looking to add Luther's Works to My Logos Libronix Digital Library System for some time. Truth be told, it was the reason I went with Logos Bible Software in the first place. The cost seemed prohibative at $250 until I found it on this site.com for $169 with free shipping! I read one review that said it was difficult to integrate with Libronix. I was nervous for that reason. However, it was NOT difficult at all. In fact, it was so simple, I wasn't sure I had done it right! This is an awesome tool, to have Luther's Works at your fingertips, to go from the index directly to the volume and page you need in a split second. Awesome! Thanks.
