Reviews - What do customers think about The Birch Grove and Other Stories (Central European Classics)?
a classic of European literature May 3, 2007
Its a classic from a relatively unknown literature from part of the world that is still in our heartland. Extremely moving and beautiful stories about universal themes, with a poetic style of great writing. The translator does it justice.
Excellent stories by J. Iwaszkiewicz. Nov 29, 2002
Themes of these stories are the opposition eros/thanatos, old/young, jealousy, the prime impulses of humanity. His scenery is the Polish countryside with its noblemen and peasantry. His technique is modern, mingling past and present with flashbacks. The Birch Grove, for instance, relates in violent terms a live-and-death struggle of two brothers for a girl. Surprising work.
