Item description for The Prayer Shawl Companion: 38 Knitted Designs to Embrace Inspire & Celebrate Life by Janet Bristow, Victoria A. Cole-Galo & Tom Hopkins...
For many, the ultimate expression of spirituality is charity. And for years, people have been crafting prayer shawls - knitted wraps to comfort those in times of need and to help others celebrate special occasions. Written by the two women at the heart of this groundswell of charity knitting, "The Prayer Shawl Companion" presents 38 wondrous wraps for all occasions, from baptism to remembrance. The book includes easy, intermediate, and challenging patterns for such inspiring creations as The Calming Shawl, and the Friendship Patchwork Shawl, and many more. Since knitting itself can be a gloriously spiritual activity, Bristow and Cole-Galo also offer advice on creating a peaceful creative environment and include heartwarming stories to and from shawl recipients. Professional knitwear designers like Kaffe Fassett and Nicky Epstein have donated more than 10 patterns.

beautiful patterns Feb 28, 2010
I borrowed this book from the library and then bought it for myself. It has many beautiful patterns and most are easy or intermediate. You'll also enjoy reading the prayer shawl stories that go with it.
Projects include yarns that are easy to fine Feb 14, 2010
These are great shawl patterns but my favorite thing about this book is that all of the yarns used to make the shawls that are photographed are easy to locate...and reasonably priced. This means that you can buy the book and the yarns and make the projects for a reasonable price without having to search the world for the yarns. Some yarns I bought at Michaels, some at Wal-Mart, some at A C Moore and some online from this site. Needle sizes are not obscure either so chances are you already have them in your knitting bag. In my experience, this makes this a very unusual book of knitting patterns! And every shawl I have gifted has been appreciated. What more can you ask for?
Perfect Book for all types of knitters! Feb 10, 2010
Our church knitting group purchased these books and we are all very pleased with them. The patterns included are for all types of knitters - beginners to experienced. The instructions are easy to understand and the pictures accurately portray the shawls. There are also beautiful prayers included as well as personal stories--very beautiful. I highly recommend this book!
Too many errors! Oct 19, 2009
While this book has some lovely shawls and the stories are nice, I was very disappointed to find so many errors in the patterns. When I realized that the pattern I was knitting just wasn't going to work, I discovered that there are five pages of errata for this book! I find it disconcerting that a publisher would send such a nice volume to print without having someone who knits check it out.
Prayer Shawl review Sep 3, 2009
The title of the book says it all. This is a very personal way to honor a person you love so much. We all need prayer and we all need each other these days.
