Overview
"Do not be afraid. Open wide the doors for Christ. To his saving power open the boundaries of states, economic and political systems, the vast fields of culture, civilization and development. Do not be afraid!" - Pope John Paul II, from Chapter Four By the time Pope John Paul II first spoke the words that became a hallmark of his papacy - "Do not be afraid!" - he had long since learned the secret to fearlessness: absolute trust in God. He had every reason to fear, or at least to be depressed. While still a young man, he endured the death of his entire family, the daily horrors of World War II in his native Poland, and the ensuing communist regime when the Soviet Union absorbed Poland after the war. As The People's Pope makes clear, the gospel truths that sustained this hero of the faith are available to you, too. The book invites you to consider the facts of this man's life - his impact on the world, his papacy that changed the face of the Catholic Church, his courage in handling crushing adversity - and to see there the hand of God. As you meet John Paul II, you will discover that although his influence was universal, his message was personal: Open wide the doors of your heart to Christ. You will find there, as he did, the strength to live confidently for God.

Reviews - What do customers think about Meet John Paul II: The People's Pope?

The People's Pope  Aug 31, 2008
Meet John Paul II begins and ends with an extraordinary liturgical celebration. In the first, we see 19-year-old Karol Wojtyla, the future pope, as the lone participant at First Friday Mass in a Polish cathedral under direct attack by Nazi bombers. "Explosions thundered and sirens wailed in a terrible herald that World War II had officially begun. Still the Mass continued," writes Janel Rodriguez. Immediately afterward, Karol went home to check on his father. The liturgy that Rodriguez describes at the end of her book is the funeral Mass for John Paul II, "a man who stood watch over the sacrifice of Christ in the Mass even as the world around him seemed to be exploding in every corner, knowing the world needed the offering of the Lord more than ever." She evokes the pope's dying words, "Let me go to the house of the Father," and the image of John Paul II "standing today at the window of the Father's house," from his funeral homily by Cardinal Ratzinger.

Between the accounts of these two liturgies, Rodriguez's well researched book is filled with stories that leave no doubt that John Paul II deserved the title "the People's Pope." At St. Florian in Krakow in 1951, Rodriguez tells us, the seed was planted for the youth rallies that marked the papacy of John Paul II. She describes Fr. Wojtyla's recruiting a small group of university women to form a choir. That group soon blossomed into a "little family" of about 200 who met regularly to worship, exchange ideas, and socialize at a time when Catholics were forbidden to congregate in public.

This is a work that goes beyond individual use. Any chapter or section could be the basis for a retreat, day of prayer, or series of faith-sharing sessions.
