Many challenges faced the first century Christian church and the Apostle Paul addressed these concerns in his epistles. This study of Colossians looks at the message written to the church in ancient Colossae and contains important theology, providing one of the most important portions in Scripture that teaches about the person of Christ. Colossians presents instructions for living and this study helps the student discover this book's relevance for believers in the 21st century. This in-depth inductive study carefully observes the text of Scripture, interprets the original intent of the book, and challenges the student to claim the eternal principles that can be applied in everyday circumstances for all those who follow Jesus Christ. The homework provides options for students and can be done in one to three hours each week. When the study is done as part of a group, the weekly discussion helps everyone gain perspective from others. Thorough Study, Excellent Format Mar 13, 2008
Wow! This is an extremely thorough, traditional, inductive study which Mrs. Wells breaks up into daily assignments. Positives: 1. Jan is obviously a master teacher. The vast majority of the study guide is carefully worded questions that guide you to study the Scripture for yourself. You come to your own conclusions and make your own applications. 2. Because it is broken up into 30-45 minute daily sessions, you never feel overwhelmed. 3. Everything you need to do the studies is printed into the study guide. You will not need any additional books except a Bible to complete the work. 4. I especially appreciate how she has you compare scripture from other books of the Bible to illuminate the passage you are studying, and then asks questions or provides a chart to reinforce the information. 5. At the risk of sounding very sexist, this is not a typical "ladies only" Bible study. It is for any serious student of the Word, but would be best for older teenagers and above in my opinion. An extremely diligent younger teenager would be able to do the work with some assistance, but might become discouraged at the length of the study. 6. She also has free leader study guides available as PDF files on her website. They were designed originally for a Bible study class, but they are enormously satisfying for personal study as well. Two negatives, neither serious enough to subtract a star from this amazing book: First, I strongly dislike the ISV Bible used throughout the text. However, realizing that many people use other versions she has placed a number of Scripture worksheets in several different versions for free as PDF files on her website. Secondly, you will mark a LOT of different sets of key words on the Scripture worksheets as part of an inductive study. On some of them she gives specific ideas (a red triangle through God or any pronouns referring to God), but on others she simply says "choose a consistent way to mark them." Unfortunately, twice I have chosen to mark a particular set of key words only to have her suggest that same color and mark for another set in a later lesson. This is a MINOR frustration, but a key for marking at the very beginning of the book or more specific instructions in the text would be welcome. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. An enormous amount of study and prayer must have gone into the writing. Studying the Bible with this guide is both exciting and rewarding. I look forward to using her other studies in the future.
