Item description for A Whole New World: Life After Bethany by Tony W. Cartledge & Jan Cartledge...

Overview
"This is a book about loss and about life, about despair and hope, about darkness and dawn. It begins with a personal accounting of a parent's worse highway nightmare and ends along a winding road where happier dreams may still be found. The central character in this story is Bethany Rush Cartledge, a sunny seven-year-old girl who dies in the first chapter but lives on every page." So begins A Whole New World, the story of Jan and Tony Cartledge's loss of their young daughter Bethany. Writing separately and together, they invite the reader to walk with them on their journey through the shock of Bethany's death, the numbness and pain of the first year without her, and the healing process of the decade that followed. As ministers, both Tony and Jan struggled with the theological implications of tragedy and loss, as well as the psychological polarities of choosing to live as victims or as survivors. Their story will touch the hearts, minds and spirits of those who read it. Included in this book is a study guide for use by individuals or small groups seeking a study of hope after despair. In addition, the appendices include considerations of how to deal with tragedy and death with children and youth, as well as a select bibliography of grief resources

Reviews - What do customers think about A Whole New World?

A "Must Read" for Ministers  Sep 22, 2005
I am a pastor and I have ministered to numerous families that have lost children and I would have been better at it if I had read this book first. "A Whole New World" should at least be on the suggested reading list and very possibly on the required reading list of basic pastoral care courses in seminaries and divinity schools.
"A Whole New World" will be a tremendous aid to those who go through the horror of losing a child and to any who seek to love them through such a nightmare. However, as a pastor, I was immediately struck by what a valuable resource the book is for vocational ministers.
I am very glad that Jan and Tony Cartledge shared their painful and hopeful journey. Don't miss it.

Getting Through Grief NOT Over Grief  Sep 20, 2005
Jan and Tony share how they move through grief, anger, and other emotions as they faced life together after the death of their daughter, Bethany.

It begins with the day that changed their lives forever - a day that crashed from normal to abnormal as eager expectations of their child returning home from a visit to her grandparents turned to wreckage, injuries, and death. They walk us through the days and weeks that followed the accident, and they share their 10-year journey of faith, love, and hope that enables them to face life again.

The book includes a discussion guide and resources that can be used to help children, youth and adults get "through" grief and understand that no one ever "gets over" grief. I've read many books on the subject of grief; this is, without a doubt, the very best!
