what a ride Mar 12, 2010
I really enjoyed this book. strong memorable characters that you want to root for and kick in the butt. It has several sequels that I am anxiously awaiting. Patrick is the type of character you would want in your corner.
some very hard to take deductive skills plus outlandish plot sink this story. Mar 6, 2010
Oh man, I was kind of hoping that the Rook might be a little more sophisticated than the Pawn. I was hoping that this sophomore novel would show some signs that James was improving as an author. Alas, this is not to be.
As I read, several silly small things pushed the envelope over the edge for me. I kept track of just a few of them.
These occurred near the beginning:
1. Bowers deduces exactly where and when a crime is going to occur through deductive reasoning on a dare from his step daughter. 2. Bowers was flown into San Diego to investigate a series of arson cases (I dont think anyone would ever fly in a crack FBI serial killer team to track down an arsonist). 3. Bowers just happens to be in the right place at the right time in order to get sucked into a more sinister plot. 4. finds several insanely impossible clues with little effort seemingly miles away from the crime scene. Quickly leaps to totally random ideas that turn into solid leads. 5. It turns out that Bowers (with the help of a programmer friend) helped to develop the most insanely complex/easy to use/best results of all time application that can compare traits on a video and match up likely suspects with no problems at all.
I could go on and on. But what I put down above occurs in the opening chapters and I dont want to give the plot away if you have not read this book.
However... if you have not read this book, STAY AWAY from this author. I would not recommend this series to anyone.
PATRICK BOWERS SECOND BOOK Feb 24, 2010
I really like the first book, THE PAWN. This was was good again, less forensics and more investigating and closer work with Lien-hua. Gettin pretty chummy. I will go on to THE KNIGHT but i could do without Tessa, she takes away in my opinion.
Great action Feb 12, 2010
But the author must know, not every bad guy can come from the same well. And maybe the kid deserves a good kick in the butt. We know who the bad guy is next time, because the story is not done, but let's mix it up.
