Dr. Jim Houston is an amazing, amazing man. He's the founding President of Regent College, Vancouver, a profoundly wise cultural observer and prophet, and one of the greatest spiritual directors/mentors of the modern/postmodern era. I sat in his office a few times while he was editing this book and it was filled with piles of books to the ceiling practically. He knows stuff and has access to literary and personal riches few have ever thought about or known. And that's exactly what I'm finding in this lovely, thoughtful book.
One of the things I like about this book is that through the various selections, Houston makes a terrific effort to re-introduce Evangelicals (his usual but not only audience) to the church calendar and to Catholic writers. I have a lot of Catholic background and it's so nice to see someone else introducing people to that so we're not so split off.
The best entries I've read so far were the two at Christmas written by Jerry Levine about his conversion as a hostage in Lebanon. I was just dumbfounded... and profoundly grateful for the opportunity to read those. Thanks Dr. Houston...
