Fairfield began his study of stress, supported in part by a grant from Mennonite Mutual Aid, in 1977, when he faced radical surgery for cancer, a disease some experts indentify with undue stress. Stress remained a topic of interest as he completed his Master of Arts in Religion in 1982 from Eastern Mennonite University.
