Overview Worried that he is failing as a boss, husband, and father, John Daily attends a retreat at a Benedictine monastery, where he learns that the foundation of leadership is authority, not power
Publishers Description With a new introduction on using the principles of "The Servant" in your life and career. In this absorbing tale, you watch the timeless principles of servant leadership unfold through the story of John Daily, a businessman whose outwardly successful life is spiraling out of control. He is failing miserably in each of his leadership roles as boss, husband, father, and coach. To get his life back on track, he reluctantly attends a weeklong leadership retreat at a remote Benedictine monastery. To John's surprise, the monk leading the seminar is a former business executive and Wall Street legend. Taking John under his wing, the monk guides him to a realization that is simple yet profound: The true foundation of leadership is not power, but authority, which is built upon relationships, love, service, and sacrifice. Along with John, you will learn that the principles in this book are neither new nor complex. They don't demand special talents; they are simply based on strengthening the bonds of respect, responsibility, and caring with the people around you. Perhaps this is why "The Servant" has touched readers from all walks of life--because its message can be applied by anyone, anywhere--at home or at work. If you are tired of books that lecture instead of teach; if you are searching for ways to improve your leadership skills; if you want to understand the timeless virtues that lead to lasting and meaningful success, then this book is one you cannot afford to miss.

The Servant by James Hunter Jan 17, 2007
The book is so simple, practical, and obvious that most people just don't think about leading by serving others. It is not specifically a religious book, but applies many of the things about the life of Jesus to how we interact with others at work, at school, with our families, plus every recreational, mentoring or social setting in which you and I partcipate.
Excellent Reference Jan 9, 2007
From the first page to the last, this book covered the topic of leadership with a new twist. The information was highlighted from various persepectives with each participant in the training environment. One of the easiest reads I have found on defining leadership. I have given this book to each of my team leads and have gotten positive feedback already. Fast read and I recommend it to managers who want to be leaders.
One of the best books I have ever read! Dec 14, 2006
I actually came across this book while walking home one day near a strip mall. I found it on the ground, and it look like it had been there for a few days. I started reading the abstract out of curiosity and it seemed interesting. I cleaned the book up a bit and began to read it at home. What an incredible book! I could not put this book down. I finished it in about 2 days. Now here is a benedictine Monk armed only with the rule of benedict teaching CEO's from various fields. The author came back with a profound sense of insight in human behaviour. He learned that a monk from 1500 yrs ago developed a system of living that bolds well for modern times. Excellent leadership book, and certainly refreshing in a time when even leadership schools have been commercialized with little feeling and zest.
