Reviews - What do customers think about Peter Crossings And The Gate of Abaddon?
Interesting stuff Jan 27, 2006
I want to preface my review by saying that I am a Christian that does not believe that Harry Potter promotes witchcraft; it's a fantasy novel, and the laws of the Harry Potter universe are not the same as ours. For that reason, I didn't read Peter Crossings thinking of it as an "alternative" to Harry Potter, but rather as its own independant work.
I found Peter Crossings and the Gate of Abaddon to be a very creative piece of work. It's obvious that James Andrew Wilson put a lot of effort into creating an imaginative and relatively original fantasy world inhabited by imaginative peoples and creatures. The creativity is where the book shines; where it does not shine is in regard to the actual writing and mechanics. While about half of the book is written decently, the other half is frequently written somewhat awkwardly, and often not even grammatically correct. There are also spelling errors (such as spelling "wish" as "whish" on more than one occassion) that I found pretty distracting. Granted, some of these aspects are less imperative for the target market of children. Overall, Peter Crossings is a highly imaginative work, though the writing is unimpressive, and certainly not Harry Potter caliber. I will be very interested to see, though, what Wilson is able to produce as he grows older and his writing matures.
Good first effort in the Young Fantasy market. Nov 17, 2004
I typically read adult level sci-fi or fantasy, but I wanted to see if this book would be a Christian novel in the style of Harry Potter-type fiction.
Overall, I liked the book, though it did have some grammatical glitches here and there, but nothing distracting. The imagery and fantasy world were described well and I am sure it will appeal to young fantasy readers. Peter, and his new friend, Andrew, embark on a fantastic adventure replete with Servants of the Light, other heroes, Widdles, giants, spider-like people, talking giant hawks, shadow villians, and the list goes on.
There were a few spots in the book that I felt the plot was a bit predictable, but this may be due to the target audience. There were also a few areas where I thought the story itself was rushed and it would have been beneficial to draw out the scenes a bit more. Despite those minor points, on the whole, the story was a good one and the book ended with a set-up for a sequel. For any parent looking for an alternative to Harry Potter, or a just a Christian book in a similar style, I would highly recommend this book.
Good read! Oct 26, 2004
This is an excellent book with a great moral foundation. Some critics will get caught up in the similarities between Peter Crossings and Harry Potter, but the similarities are superficial and do not have a measurable effect on the plot. As they say, there is nothing new under the sun. This author has a great voice and is an skillful writer for one so young. This book is a great alternative to the secular fantasy books that are questionable or have a harmful effect on youth. I look forward to release of the second book in the series.
Move over Harry Potter! Jul 4, 2004
From an educated, critical thinking Christian, I think this is the best thing that has happened on the Christian market. I have been working with children for over 25 years and know what they like. They will love this. Harry Potter has met his match. I have a hard time understanding where the person that wrote a negative review on this book is coming from. Evidently they are not involved with the kids that have life long problems because of their involvement with Harry Potter books. I have, ever since they have come on the market. The books are dangerous!!! It is wonderful to have an alternative to offer our kids. Keep up the good work James.
Keep it up! Jul 2, 2004
This book was amazing! It had a great blend of action, mystery and fun. It had me at the edge of my seat the entire time; it was exactly what I have been looking for. Five thumbs up to an awesome new author. I can't wait 'till his next book, certainly NOT a Loser!
