Reviews - What do customers think about Defining Moments: A Novel?
In the midst of pain, come blessings Mar 21, 2007
DEFINING MOMENTS by Jacquelin Thomas is the long-awaited sequel to The Prodigal Husband. This time around Thomas focuses on Sheila Moore, the antagonist from the earlier novel. Sheila has relocated to New York amidst the scandal and disappointment of her failed affair with Jake. After living in New York for four years, she receives devastating news and decides to return to Charleston to be near her family. Her transition back to what was once home is a difficult one as she tries to balance the new circumstances of her life against the choices and misdeeds of her past. Sheila still harbors jealousy and anger towards her former friends, Tori and Jake, and those emotions stunt and doom her to a life of loneliness. When she finds friendship in an unlikely place, she begins to open her heart to forgiveness. Through that friendship, she is exposed to God's love and redemption.
Jacquelin Thomas has crafted a story that delves into the psyche of a woman scorned who is given a new chance at happiness in spite of dire circumstances. All the characters from the previous novel return and add a nice flavor while rounding out the story. Tori and Jake's relationship is revisited and seeks to deal with some of the real life issues that people face when deciding to give a cheating spouse a second chance. DEFINING MOMENTS is Christian fiction at its best. Thomas artfully writes a story of God's redemptive love and forgiveness without becoming preachy.

Inspirational Mar 20, 2007
I enjoyed this novel. I found a lot of myself within the pages. Forgiveness is hard. Especially when you have to forgive and forget. And like Sheila, I'm still working on that one. Thomas' novels give you that spiritual refresher you need. Remind you of the things you need to lay before God yourself. I must admit the romantic in me was hoping that Sheila and Nicholas would stay together, but I think she got something much more wonderful out of her relationship with him. He helped lead her to the Lord and what better relationship is there than one with Our Lord, Jesus Christ.
terrific contemporary inspirational tale Feb 10, 2007
Sheila Moore fled Columbia, South Carolina allegedly to open up the New York branch of Madison Moore Creative Visual Solutions Inc. However, business did not send her from her hometown. She left because Sheila is ashamed of the stunts she pulled to break up Jake's marriage especially when she finally realized her love for her business partner Jake Madison will always remain unrequited; as he cherishes his wife Tori (see THE PRODIGAL HUSBAND).
Four years since she turned Tori's life into hell, Sheila has seemingly moved on until a doctor informs her during a routine physical that she suffers form multiple sclerosis. Now she not just a broken hearted women; she is a broken woman. Still as Sheila has throughout her life, she will gather information and begin a campaign that the military would be proud to call their own. At a bookstore seeking information on MS, she meets author Nicholas Washington, Tori's best friend. As they become better acquainted an attraction grows, but her self image refuses to allow her to accept his kindness and love. Worse she and Tori still have issues that cause pain and confusion for the two men they both care about and who in their ways love each of them.
Though a sequel, DEFINING MOMENTS stands alone as a terrific contemporary inspirational tale using reflection to tell the key points of the first story, which this reviewer has not read. Tori knows she forgives her spouse for his indiscretions but still detests her rival; Sheila remains jealous of Tori who won the prize Jake while she fled in self exile. Now they tug on Nicholas, who tries to help both females by bringing God into their lives. Though apparently Sheila was the evil wicked woman in the PRODIGAL HUSBAND, this time she must overcome her self-loathing and humiliation as Nicholas offers her redemption in a strong character driven tale.
Missing A Little Something... Jan 7, 2007
I'm sorry, but I just did not appreciate most of the dialog between Nicholas and Sheila presented in this novel. First and foremost, let's remember that "every good gift and every perfect gift is from above - do NOT be deceived!". I'm literally turned off by any novel that claims to be a "Christinan novel" with characters that are clueless to this fact!
In the opening of the novel, we are informed that Sheila has been diagnosed with MS. After a few chapters, she befriends Nicholas (who is one of Tori's closest friends). Being that Nicholas was a together brother and a devoted Christian, I expected him to take a stand when Sheila kept questioning "why would a loving God allow this to happen to me?" I really thought this would be his opportunity to really break-it-down. You know, say something like: "Well Sheila, it's unfortunate that you have MS and I don't know why you have it but you have to know that God did NOT give this to you to teach you a lesson or because he is upset with you. But I do know that it is the enemy that comes to steal, kill and destroy. God loves us unconditionally. While we were yet sinners, he sent his only begotten Son to die for us. James 1:13 tells us that when we are tempted ...."
But nooooooo, Nicholas was giving Sheila the "I'm not sure" or "I don't know" approach as if to say he too was wondering the same thing.
But to be fair, I did appreciate the forgiveness displayed on Tory's behalf towards her husband and Sheila.
Three Hankie Novel for Me Jan 6, 2007
I loved this story! It was educational (about MS), romantic and spiritually mindful of what forgivness really is about. I am a first time reader of Ms Thomas and was delighted with the depth of her tale. I didn't read PRODICAL HUSBAND but after reading DEFINING MOMENTS, I plan to. Sheila reflects the selfish malady in society today. Her character, although unpleasant is indicative to so many people...its about me, me, me. Only Christ can remove that mirrored image of life and put a Heavenly agenda in its place. I loved reading this story and hope for a follow up with those two, since the romance aspect was sort of left open end. From my lips to Ms Thomas' pen. I'm a sucker for romantic happy endings. Wonderful book!
