Item description for The Thorazine Mirrorball by Jack Maeby...
Welcome back, Jimmy Mack. You still crazy? His friends and fellow musicians want to know. He's free, off anti-psychotic meds and back on the scene, playing jazz and R&B in the urban backwater of Albany, New York in 1972. Life seems almost normal until members of the soul music revue he's working with start turning up dead, and Jimmy is the main suspect. It doesn't help that he's falling for Yvonne, a devastatingly beautiful singer, who may be up to her cool blue eyes in a deadly scheme. Jimmy looks to his friend Laid, a methadone-addicted keyboard genius, and Shorty, an irascible soul-music DJ, to help him avoid the cops, the killers and his own descent back into madness. The story unfolds in the rhythms of jazz and blues, with stops at chitlin' circuit nightclubs, gay cabarets and after-hours discotheques. Music becomes Jimmy's refuge, as well as the key to figuring out who the real killer is. Jimmy has some hard choices to make that force him to either conquer his inner demons or be lost forever.

Reviews - What do customers think about The Thorazine Mirrorball?
Excellent Updated Hard-boiled Mystery Aug 31, 2008
The characters of Avery, Laid, Childs, Lydia, and cold selfish Yvonne will stay in my mind because of their honest actions and complexes. The tiny tidbits of information for naive readers as myself, to the realm of their world; made this book not only enjoyable but an education. It is possible to read this book, put it aside and pick it up again later and you jump in with the same enthusiasm as before. Nothing boring here!
Fascinating--must read! Apr 4, 2008
No surprise to learn that Jack Maeby is, in fact, a professional pianist, composer and musical director. These many musical talents are reflected in THE THORAZINE MIRRORBALL, a skillfully crafted taut thriller set against the advent of disco. Hero Jimmy Mack has finally quit taking Thorazine to rejoin his fellow musicians playing jazz and R & B in the soul music revue. When bodies start falling, Jimmy Mack is the prime suspect and must prove his innocence. What I liked most was being shown a world where music rules, and, where the newness of the disco beat is regarded as threatening by traditional musicians, yet exciting. It vividly portrays the dawning of a new musical age. Jimmy Mack presents a compelling, compassionate character as he battles with his inner demons. He is someone I really wanted to root for. I'm hoping there will be more Jimmy Mack adventures because I'll put my order in now!
