Item description for Greek to Me by J. Lyle Story, Cullen I. K. Story & Peter Allen Miller...

For many students in seminary and Bible colleges, as well as self-taught students, Greek is the language of never-ending endings as well as the seemingly impossible requirement of an inflexible curriculum. The grammar in Greek to Me aims to encourage and motivate students to learn both grammar and vocabulary of koine Greek in a new and productive way. The approach is new, yet it has been tried and tested with hundreds of students, and the response has been overwhelmingly positive.

Reviews - What do customers think about Greek to Me?

A Good Supplement for Beginners  Jul 2, 2004
I am using this book now as a supplement to Mounce's text, The Basics of Biblical Greek Grammar. I find that using both books beats using one or the other. Story's text is simpler and more inductive. Mounce claims his approach is a mixture of inductive and deductive methodology, but I don't see enough inductive practice in his book. Mounce's translation exercises are generally out of the New Testament, Septuagint, and church fathers, with a few shorter sentences or phrases at the beginning of each chapter of exercises. I like as an inductive approach as possible. I learned Hebrew much more inductively, starting in Hebrew school in my elementary school years with Hebrew primers that were like the old Dick, Jane, and Sally books we used in public school.

We still need a really inductive approach to Greek. Come on, people spoke these languages before they were old enough to understand the writings. As Story has more made-up phrases and sentences than does Mounce, I find Story a good supplement to Mounce.

I am using a hard-cover copy of Story borrowed from the library here where I teach at Tennessee Temple University. I wonder if the paperback would fall apart easily the way some paperback do?

The pictures seem for the most part silly. Then again, I already know case, gender, and number, as I have had several languages already.

puerile  Feb 20, 2004
I bought Greek to Me, hoping it might be a useful supplement to Mounce's Basics of Biblical Greek. I hoped it might have some useful excercises, or a fresh perspective.

I got "Oh my, a tie. Amethyst tie."

This is an example of the sort of mnemonic devices this book uses, in this case for the endings for the present passive indicative verbs. These are accomponied by cutsie, often downright surreal cartoons, supposed to portray the "memory aid". For this one, it showed an amethyst ring passing a tie as a present to a character called "Lu" (the stem of the verb).

PASSive. PRESENT. Get it?

Me neither. I mean, I get what they are TRYING to do, but the approach doesn't give the student any real understanding of how the conjugation works, or even the right way to SPELL the endings. It might permit the student to DECIPHER Greek, but not to understand it as natural language.

This book presupposes no understanding of even English grammar, nor does it make an attempt to convey the grammatical concepts one needs in order to read Greek. It just teaches you to memorize bizzare variations on the TERMS, without understanding what they mean.

The book preports to save students from the agony of rote memorization, but it encourages the WORST kind of memorization-without-comprehension. Each chapter has maybe a half dozen parsing excercises, but little else, other than many NON-Biblical, newly-created Greek passages for translation. Want to check your work? Oh, well, you have to pay $20 for the translation key from the author's website.

I should have expected as much from a professor from Pat Robertson's pet college.

The easy way to learn Greek  Jan 26, 2003
This is the book I used to learn beginning Greek grammar. This is an excellent program. Story makes learning Greek easy! He uses Memory Visualization i.e. goofy pictures to help you learn vocab and paradigms. It really worked well for the class I was in, and the silly pictures seemed to make Greek a little less daunting for the novice. Another nice thing about it is that you work through all of the verb paradigms and get down to words occuring 25 times. Now, I am teaching and tutoring Greek students using this book, and I'm finding it just as easy to teach from as it was to learn from. Truly an inventive and masterful system.
Great Ceasar's Greek!  Dec 17, 2002
This is it. The best Biblical Greek text out there. (Trust me, I've read them all). Story uses word pictures to aid in memorization and recall. Along with the flash cards, this is the best tool for learning New Testament Greek.
