Reviews - What do customers think about A Home for the Homeless: A Social-Scientific Criticism of 1 Peter, Its Situation and Strategy?

Suppose Jesus' command to "welcome the stranger" led exiles and aliens to claim this as their earthly home too?  Aug 4, 2008
Suppose Jesus' call to feed the hungry, welcome the stranger, clothe the naked, visit the prisoner and care for the sick (Matthew 25) led to a community of "aliens and exiles" being fashioned as church (1 Peter). Would they have anything to say to us? Would we be interested in hearing their witness? These are some of the questions John Elliott's "A Home for the Homeless" examines.

More detailed than most will need (and more concisely treated in Elliott's subsequent Anchor Bible Commentary on 1 Peter), this is nonetheless an important corrective to those who prefer their aliens and exiles to be taken symbolically. If Peter's naming of the socially marginalized is to be taken literally, however, as Elliot argues (p. 130), then the hope for these Christians "is not an ephemeral `heaven is our home' form of consolation, but the new home and social family which the Christians belong to here and now."
