More About J. Daniel Smith, Dennis Jernigan & Don Cason
I grew up in a pastor’s home where at a very early age I began playing the piano. I have a memory of my mother plopping me down on the piano bench next to her in our home one day. Her purpose was to keep me out of trouble. However, what she began to notice was that I was picking out melodies and able to play familiar church songs and choruses that were being sung in our church. Didn’t take long for me to add chords to those melodies and I was off and running. Though I took piano lessons as a child, I am primarily a self-taught musician. I began directing choirs in my dad’s church as an adolescent. Music and ministry was our life and frankly, that was about all we ever did.
My work in the recording studio began in 1980 in Dallas, Texas. I played keyboards and began orchestrating on custom projects. In 1985 I made my entrance into the world of publishing with my first choral collection. Choral work took me to a new level of orchestral recording as I ventured out of Dallas to other recording cities. A quick glance at the “clients” page of this site will show you that I’ve had quite a journey since my early days of recording. I’m blessed…very blessed indeed.
After schooling, I began working in churches as a music director in the midwest. On November 1, 1974 I married Becky Nyswonger from Indianola, Iowa. Fortunately, this beautiful lady is still with me today and we have two fabulous children. Our son, Shaylor, is twenty-seven, and our daughter, Sheridan is twenty-two. We are enormously proud of them and enjoy being part of their lives.
It was on May 2, 1978 that Becky and I landed in Fort Worth, Texas. As we say, “we weren’t born in Texas, but we got here as fast as we could!” We became music pastors at Bethesda Community Church and still serve in that capacity today more than thirty-two years later. We are honored to be able to serve the music ministry of this fellowship alongside the incredible leadership of Senior Pastors Desmond and Mary Evans.
