Item description for Readings From Mennonite Writings by J. Craig Haas...

Mennonites have their own spiritual literature. It spans from the present to the early sixteenth century; it comes not only from the northern hemisphere, but from Africa and South America as well. This collection offers 366 readings. They come from each century since Mennonites begin in the early 1500's in Europe. The selections include the various groups related to the Mennonite family of Faith - Mennonites of many varieties, Amish, Hutterites, River Brethren, and Brethren in Christ. Contemporary Mennonite voices from around the world are here as well. Short Meditative, these readings as a whole capture Mennonite themes and concerns through the ages.

Publishers Description
Imagine raising six spirited kids on a grass farm. Today. Thatrsquo;ll test any mamarsquo;s strength. Dorcas Smucker and her brood live out their days in full view in this collection of musingspicking blueberries while watching for bears hoping for angels driving off the nearby freeway moving into the ldquo;thousandstory houserdquo; enduring 15yearold Mattrsquo;s lecture on respect while captive in the car. Then there was the fourweek road trip which Dorcas says ldquo;My sisterinlaw warned me would be like putting your whole family in a bathroom and staying there for three days.rdquo; Dorcas and her husband Paul are purposeful parents. But they arenrsquo;t perfect. Dorcas wonders if their marriage can endure when she and Paul canrsquo;t ever figure out what gifts to give each other. She tries to navigate her mild daughterrsquo;s development into a very certain self wondering ldquo;When do I give in and when do I stand firmrdquo;There are no recipes here. But there is story upon story. Dorcas has three daughters and three sons. And she has a voiceencouraging doubting entertaining but never taking herself too seriously. Often slightly offstride and with disarming humility Dorcas keeps finding resource in her life at home ldquo;Often the things we donrsquo;t know we need come into our lives without knocking.rdquo;

Reviews - What do customers think about Readings From Mennonite Writings?

A very cool book!  Sep 9, 2007
This is a great book for folks who would like to read what the Mennonite - Anabaptist think about themselves, and life in general. It covers a lot of years, from the 1500's to the 1990's. What I really like is that it is laid out like a devotional, with an "insight" for every day of the year.

The book has a wide verity of authors, from Moms to Elders, Old & New, and from all over the world. Each one shares a nugget from their Faith for us to learn from and ponder.

If you are looking for a book about the Anabaptist heritage from folks that have lived it, this is the book. I recommend this one!
