Item description for The Message of Philippians: Jesus Our Joy (Bible Speaks Today) by J. Alec Motyer...
Overview The apostle Paul was bound by prison chains when he wrote to the church at Philippi. Despite his loss of liberty, and opposition from fellow-workers, the letter radiates joy--joy that Christ was proclaimed, joy in fellowship with the Phil- ippian Christians, and above all joy in Jesus himself. In The Message of Philippians Alec Motyer explores Paul's great themes, so relevant today: Christian unity, the Person of Jesus and what he has achieved for us, and the call to live worthy of the gospel.
Publishers Description If you were in jail, what sort of letter would you write to your Christian friends? Would it focus on the difficulties--the poor food, cramped quarters and lonely isolation? Paul's letter to the Philippians, written from prison, has no hint of self-pity. The letter radiates joy--joy that Christ was proclaimed, joy in fellowship with the Philippian Christians and, above all, joy in Jesus himself. In this volume of the Bible Speaks Today series, Alec Motyer identifies three major themes that filled Paul's heart and mind as he wrote: the unity of the church, the person of Jesus and what he has achieved, and the call to live a life worthy of the gospel.

Reviews - What do customers think about The Message of Philippians: Jesus Our Joy (Bible Speaks Today)?
A great book - A reader in NC Jul 15, 2006
I am very familiar with this Philippians commentary from The Bible Speaks Today Series (IVP). I loved the commentary and found his writing and perspective and understanding deep and penetrating but accessible.
Motyer's area of focus is the links between OT and NT. He gives the reader a deep and insighful and personally meaningful discussion of the text, pointing out the meaning of the words in the original languages when it is helpful to our growth. I would love to read other things by Alec Motyer. Totally recommend for pastors and teachers as well as small groups interested in a good deep read of the book.
