Item description for A Life by Italo Svevo & Archibald Colquhoun...

A Life is the story of the frustrated existence of a bank-clerk with a poetic soul. Alfonso wants to be a poet and seems to be falling in love with Annetta, the vain and arrogant daughter of his boss. But the emptiness of his attempts at writing and love lead to an ironic and painful conclusion.

Italo Svevo was born in Trieste in 1861. He wrote and published at his own expense A Life, followed by Senility, a novel of tortured eroticism. Svevo was just becoming recognised in Italy when he was killed in a car accident in 1928.

More About Italo Svevo & Archibald Colquhoun

Register your artisan biography and upload your photo! Italo Svevo, (1861-1928) Italian novelist and short-story writer, a pioneer of the psychological novel in Italy. He was born Ettore Schmitz, in Trieste, but he adopted the pseudonym, Italo Svevo, or Italus the Swabian, to acknowledge his mixed heritage: Italian by language (Trieste dialeto), Austrian by citizenship (Trieste was a city of the Austro-Hungarian Empire), and German (in fact, German-Jewish) by ancestry. He attended a commercial school in Trieste, but his father's business difficulties forced him to leave school and become a bank clerk. He continued to read on his own and began to write.

Italo Svevo was born in 1861 and died in 1928.
