Reviews - What do customers think about Ultimate Spanish: Basic-Intermediate Cassette Program (Ultimate Beginner-Intermediate)?
Excellent Spanish course covering both Castilian and Latin American Spanish Nov 22, 2007
As the editor of the Learning Spanish Products Reviews (LearningSpanishProductsReviews) site, one of my responsibilities is to review learning-Spanish resources. I am also a native Spanish speaker from Argentina, and a professional private Spanish instructor. In addition, I am the author of two learning-Spanish products offered here at this site:
1. Anna Rivera's 1000 Plus Most Powerful Spanish Words
2. Anna Rivera's 800 Plus Most Powerful Spanish Phrases
Ultimate Spanish Beginner-Intermediate is a very comprehensive course covering both Castilian and Latin American Spanish. The speakers speak at a pace that is not too slow and not too fast to understand. Unlike many Spanish courses designed for beginners you will walk away from this course with a huge vocabulary. And the more words that you know in Spanish the better you can communicate. Another great feature of this course is that it has lots of dialogs covering numerous topics. Here are just a few examples of the topics of conversation that you will hear: banking, going to the theatre, being a victim of a crime, sports, going to the movies, watching television, at the post office, looking for employment, at the gas station, in the farmacy, at the electronics department, traveling by train, renting an apartment, renting a car, buying a computer, at the beach, at the doctor, at the airport, and so many other topics. I advise that you listen to these dialogs over and over again so that the new vocabulary words stick in your head.
After you finish with this, then you can start the next course in the series: Ultimate Spanish Advanced (Book) (LL(R) Ultimate Advanced Course)
Word of caution. You can buy the books separately for both the Beginner and Advanced Ultimate Spanish courses. Be sure that what you are ordering isn't just the textbook for either course, but the complete set of CDs. Both this course and the advanced course contain 8 CDs - 4 of which are to be used "at home" and the other 4 contain similar content but are designed to be used "in the car" to reinforce what you have learned at home.
There also seems to be some confusion with the correct name of this product. I have 2 identical CD products of this same course. Once is called Ultimate Spanish Beginner-Intermediate and the other is called Ultimat Spanish Basic.
I'm not sure if this is really beginner... Nov 16, 2007
I took a few years of spanish in middle and early high school, and am returning to it over 15 years later, using this and other products... there is a lot of nice things about this book and CD set. I have finished my first "run-through" of the home CD sets, following along in the book. There are real life situations and nice variety to the dialogues, and there is a definite buildup, though the concepts presented are a bit random in order of presentation. I do like having the book to follow along as I am relearning the material, as opposed to some other more audio-based spanish learning products. My biggest issue with this book is that it feels like they are covering too much material in too short of space. For something to be called "ultimate spanish" for beginners to intermediate, one would expect more material explaining the concepts, as well as more audio dialogues emphasizing and re-emphasizing the concepts. In conclusion, I think this is a good product, but for relative beginners like me needs to be accompanied by other materials and is not a good "stand-alone" course. I agree with some other reviewers that this product probably shines as a reference material for those who in the past had a good grasp of the language and need brushing up. I will likely come back to this once I use other materials...
Definitely not for beginners Mar 9, 2007
I'm OK with it, because I am freshening up my Spanish, so there is already considerable knowledge of the language, but an absolute beginner would be lost.
Also, I am only at lesson 4 at the moment, and already found 3 typing/spelling mistakes in the book - that is most annoying in a language book (it is annoying in ANY book, but in a learning book it is an absolute NO-GO).
Cannot recommend it and am glad that I did not buy it but borrowed it at the library.
Made Spanish and I amigos Sep 23, 2006
I love, love, love this set! I started using this as a 9th grader doing independent study, and took to it so easily. It was really easy to follow, and helped me learn most of the basics of the language. Everyone is always suprised to hear all the spanish that comes out of this African American girl's mouth! The tapes even helped me pick up a decent accent too! (Lol) Now, nine years later, at the start of my career, I can still envision the pages of this book when I'm using Spanish with my children and families (I'm an early childhood educator). The dialogs are so easy to learn, speak, read, and write- it's awesome. I'm ordering it again because it was such an important tool then, I know it will be even more helpful now as an adult.
Not a Good Book For Beginners May 13, 2004
I definitely do not recommended this book for someone who is trying to learn Spanish. I had 2 years of Spanish in High School and I was still confused going thru this book. The layout of the book is not conducive to learning spanish. It's skips over the basics and tries to engage you in conversations from the beginning.
