Item description for Starlight and Time: Solving the Puzzle of Distant Starlight in a Young Universe by Russell Humphreys...
Overview The Bible says the universe is just thousands of years old, and yet we can see stars that are billions of light-years away. Until now, creation scientists have not had a satisfactory answer to this puzzle, but the new cosmology outlined in this book offers a fresh and scientifically sound solution. Though he challenges some traditional creationist theories, Dr. Humphreys takes Scripture very straightforwardly, upholding its inerrancy and the idea of a young universe as he explains days one through four of Creation Week. This book not only contains an easy-to-read popular summary of this new cosmology, but also two technical papers which were very well received at the Third International Conference on Creationism.

Reviews - What do customers think about Starlight And Time?
Humphrey's unconvincingly shaky views May 20, 2008
I will agree that it is a very interesting read. However, I think his theory has its problems and this is when I come in and say that it is unscientific and unbiblical. While I know he's a young earth creationists I just found too many verses in my opinion to be taken out of context (especially Psalm 148:1-4) due to his literalist interpretation. But, there's more I have a problem with, 1)He seems to allude that he knows how big the universe is since there is a center, 2)He assumes that there was rapidity involved with the dispersion of the galaxies and stars, 3)And then he assumes the expansion of the universe came to a halt. These 3 things lead me to find it more harder to trust Dr. Russell Humphreys theory of the Starlight and Time. As Christian I am, I believe that we need to be honest and not be fearful of different views and interpretations. This is what led me to become an Old Earth Creationist. But what I'm getting at is that Starlight and Time is not only unscientific but if such view is true would screw up our universe. I would test this book before accepting it. I would take look at reading the books, Big Bang: The Origin of the Universe by Simon Singh and The Creator and the Cosmos by Hugh Ross. I encourage you to have an open mind and allow for different views.
Takes the complex and makes it pretty simple to understand Mar 30, 2008
Humphreys presents his theory as a theory, but gives scientific data that he feels supports it, unlike the "big bang" (which he helps one to understand better by the way) which is so often presented as being a fact with nothing but speculation to back it up.
up all night... Jan 25, 2008
I couldn't put this book down, it was in plain English so I, (A Filmmaker) could even grasp the theory. Even if Humphreys is wrong in his biblical interpretation, he has contributed significantly to cosmological studies. We have known that presuppositions are important for the Big-Bang theory--but Humphreys has worked this through in some detail. Furthermore, he has demonstrated that with different presuppositions, different conclusions are possible. A door has opened--Christian students of cosmology will find this research a great stimulus to their own thinking.
Intriguing little book Dec 25, 2007
I found this book intriguing to say the least. Firstly, it's in plain english for those non-physicists whom I should point out also have an opinion on the origin of the universe - it's not only left to the PhD. folks to blabble.
The book focuses on an alternate theory a bit different from the big bang. That alone is enough to incite passionate debate. However, you should discard all the reviews that attack the person rather than the theory. The theory is different but entirely plausible as laid out by the author. However, I found it soft in the middle around the initial assumption of a hydrosphere and it's biblical support. His arguments were convincing but I was having difficulty reconciling this with the creation story. It requires an open mind to say the least and I probably don't have the prerequisite.
Day 4 is where the author strays into conjecture which is scientifically untestable. However, the author freely admits that this is the case - no more no less than the big bang's 'infinite point source' rubbish. All in all, the book forces you to think about an event from a different, fresh perspective. And that is what good books do. It's a step in the right direction although, as pointed out by the author, it still needs work. It's refreshing to know that the Big Bang isn't all there is as an explanation. Buy this book for a good read. Time alone will tell whether the theory weighs any.
A cosmological approach consistent with the Bible and science Dec 23, 2007
There are alternative theories to the Big Bang, just as scientifically valid. The Bible's account of creation is consistent with the latest scientific research. Conventional big-bang cosmology assumes our universe is unbounded, although this assumption can neither be proven nor disproven. However, the Bible indicates our physical universe is bounded. If one incorporates the Biblical claim in exactly the same mathematical formulas used for the Big Bang, a very different cosmology is produced due to gravitational time dilation in a bounded system with center of mass. In short, billions of years of physical time would have elapsed in areas of the galaxy until the event horizon equalized during the creation of the universe, while the Biblical account would naturally relate 'Earth' days since it is intended for men.
The initial statement in Genesis 1:1 that "In the beginning, God created the Heaven and the Earth." can also be perfectly translated "At the very beginning of time, God created space and matter" and what better simple way to describe a `black hole' than the next verse "And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness [was] upon the face of the deep ..." from which the Creator used to make the rest of the universe? This almost surely reflects what is intended. The resulting cosmology is amazingly consistent with the Biblical record of Creation, and this black/white hole cosmology also provides a uniquely viable explanation for red shifts. If there was an intelligent Creator, He was certainly well aware of the physical laws He put in place and how to most effectively utilize their processes.
The basics of this cosmology have now been endorsed and refined by a prestigious scientific journal, the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) (see Smoller, J. and Temple, B, Shock-wave cosmology inside a black hole, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences 100(20):11216-11218, 30 September 2003).
There is no logical basis for dismissing this cosmology as a possibility, since the only difference from conventional Big-Bang cosmology is a single assumption of boundedness, which is already present as a variable in existing equations. If anyone is truly interested in examining all scientific possibilities (i.e. in the true spirit of science), read this book! The author has worked for Sandia National Laboratories in nuclear physics, geophysics, pulsed power research, theoretical atomic and nuclear physics, and the Particle Beam Fusion Project, is extensively published in mainstream journals, and he examines the Bible text in uncompromising detail. After almost ten years of spurious attacks from evolutionists, there have been no errors found yet in his science, although of course evolutionists object to his theology. Please don't lightly dismiss this until you check it out. If anyone is truly interested in scientific objectivity and not atheistic zeal in the name of science, this book is a must read. Dr. Humphreys is brilliant, and explains his theory in easy to understand terms for laymen or much more scientific detail for those interested. Ignore the atheist naysayers and get the book and DVD now!!
