Item description for Gold from Dark Mines: Providence and Grace in the Lives of Six Famous Christians by Irene Howat...

Overview
Many biographies of Christians begin at the point of the subject's conversion, with little attention paid to the preceding years. The emphasis of this book is different. As God has chosen his people before the beginning of time his interest with them does not begin at conversion. Gold from dark mines focuses on the pre-conversion years of its six subjects and how they came to faith. After telling their life stories in brief each section is concluded by showing how God used the experiences they went through before conversion to achieve what he did in their lives. As award winning biographer, Irene Howat, puts it 'It is surely true that the darkest mine from which believers take spiritual gold is the dark mine of their own pre-conversion experience.' Through this beautifully conceived book you will see the benefits (if that is the word!) of the problems of Jonathan Edwards, Isobel Kuhn, Charles Spurgeon, St. Augustine of Hippo, John Bunyan and Selina, Countess of Huntingdon. God's providential dealing with his chosen children, before his work of grace took place in their hearts, makes for encouraging reading. This is a delightful book that will inspire all Christians. It demonstrates how in God's providence he redeems our 'lost ' years by turning them into tools to help build his kingdom.

Reviews - What do customers think about Gold From Dark Mines: Journey to conversion of six Christians?

Amazing, Even Our Baggage Ends Up Used For Good....  Jul 11, 2006
Through mini-bios of six Christians, emphasizing their pre-conversion years, GOLD FROM DARK MINES illustrates that God redeems the experiences of our dark, lost years in addition to redeeming our souls and that God's interest in the individual begins long before conversion. The six profiled are Augustine, John Bunyan, Selina Countess of Huntingdon, Jonathan Edwards, Charles Spurgeon, and Isobel Kuhn. Surely there's something for each reader to identify with, as the six journeys to faith run the gamut in terms of conversion antecedents: hedonism, devotion to astrology and cultic theology, worshipping church rather than God, trusting in helping others/doing good rather than what Christ did, family dysfunction, liberal theology, suicidal tendencies, questioning second-hand faith, etc. I was also struck by the range of people, even seemingly insignificant people, that influenced the six along their ways: a godly man gave a book to his daughter that later influenced her husband; an untrained substitute preacher's simple sermon; a no nonsense rebuker; a sister-in-law mentor; unrelated mentors (professional and unprofessional); a mother who prayed for decades, etc. I most enjoyed the end of each bio, when the author puts the pieces of the puzzle together showing how the past specifics end up used as tools for the Christian's unique contribution to God's kingdom. Practically, the book can encourage us to let go of any regretful looking-back and to press on with confidence; strengthen our hope for not-yet-reborn loved ones; inspire us to be pro-active positive influences, showing us that little deeds can have eternal effects; increase our appreciation of God's longsuffering and wisdom; and discourage judging the validity of others' journeys, since the conversion process is providentially individualized, not formulaic.
