Reviews - What do customers think about Holy Bible: New King James Version, Black Morocco Leather, Minister's, Deluxe?
Excellent quality but be aware of minor aspects. Jun 13, 2007
When I saw this offering by Hendrickson I thought I had finally found what I've been looking for: a quality NKJV translation in versified format without voluminous study notes and including the complete set of cross-references (as found in the MacArthur NKJV Study Bible and the Baptist Study Edition Bible). Although the manufacturing quality does seem very high, I was disappointed to find that the text is paragraph format--not versified. Unfortunately, the few images of the text I was able to check before hand happened to come from pages which appear in versified form (in places in the NT), but the majority of the text is paragraph format. So if you are looking for a text to use heavily in study, this alone may be a deciding factor. This makes it considerably more difficult to quickly find a verse--during study or especially when preaching, trying to keep track of your location. Also, the verse numbers (which appear in superscript within paragraphs) are difficult to tell apart from superscript textual notes (which describe variations between manuscript families)--both utilize numbers whereas the cross-references appear in superscript letters. Another slightly problematic aspect: if you are someone who wants to add notes, there is very little room--almost none, especially at the bottom of each page. For whatever reason, the text on the page is shifted downward so that top margin is about 1/2" minimum whereas the bottom margin is a scant 1/4". It would have been better to have 1/4" margin at the top leaving an additional 1/4" margin at the bottom for added footnotes of your own. The text itself almost exactly matches that within the MacArthur study bible--identical paragraph breaks and headings. The font size is about the same too, although the lines have less vertical separation making this text more difficult to read than the (already small) text in the MacArthur Study Bible--which is pretty small in order to make room for all the additional study notes. Lastly, the concordance is skimpy at best: not a solid one like you'd expect in a "Minister's Bible." I would have preferred less ministry helps in favor of a more extensive concordance. (Both the updated MacArthur NKJV Study Bible and the Baptist Study Edition have a much better concordance--identical between the two.)
Although this text is well made and a nice size to handle, I rated it only a 4 because the text is somewhat small and crowded to read, no room for notes, and a lackluster concordance.
In some ways, I'm surprised they consider this a "Minister's Bible" since it is not well suited for preaching (IMHO) because of its paragraph format and crowded text layout.
