A heartfelt and informative story Aug 11, 2008
Holly's book is both an interest for a clinician and for someone living with Bipolar Disorder. She writes from the heart and provides the reader with a page turning biography of living with this disorder!
A fascinating, yet easy read Aug 8, 2008
Although not Bipolar myself, I have dated a bipolar lady and have firsthand experience how this brain chemical illness affected her.Holly's story rings so true with how this illness, untreated, can torture a person's life. Her book is a story of human will triumphing over all.It is an easy read, and entertaining on multiple levels. If you want to better understand BP, if you know someone whom you think might be BP or if you just want to read a fascinating story of one lady's battle and triumph over BP, then pick up this book.BP affects about 1 in every 100 people, and it's ashame how misunderstood and misdiagnosed this affliction is.Highly recommended!
Not just informitive but a great read! Jul 22, 2008
I grew up with a bi-polar father and an undiagnosed bi-polar condition myself. I was very reluctant to admit that I might actually have the condition, they called it Manic Depression then, that claimed my father's life through suicide. I have only recently accepted my own condition and Holly Hollan's book, Soaring and Crashing, My Bi-Polar Adventures, was very helpful to me in becoming more comfortable with my own condition.
Soaring and Crashing, My Bi-Polar Adventures is very easy to read; Holly kept the story moving along, kept me interested throughout, and made learning about bi-polarity something that just happened along the way. After reading Holly's book, I see some of my own history in a new light and I'm not so afraid to accept that I am bi-polar after all.
It's hard for me to describe some of the things I've been through in terms of my own disorder but Holly did a great job of taking what is a difficult set of presenting "symptoms" and describing them through and around her own story. Holly provided some factual information about the condition while making her tale easy to read and understand. It wasn't like reading a textbook about the bi-polar condition; it was more like reading a novel.
I can whole-heartedly recommend Soaring and Crashing, My Bi-Polar Adventures to anyone who wants to understand their own bi-polarity, that of a family member or close friend or someone who just wants to understand this condition in general (which has so often been misdiagnosed, as mine was for 30 years) in a less formal - less text-book style - more easy to digest kind of way. Way to go Holly! You Rock!

Typically I have a hard time getting into some books but when it is written in a way that keeps me interested I just can't put it down. This book is definately the latter.
The subject was something that I had little knowledge, since reading the book it has opened my eyes to unimaginable things that can happen to a person who is bipolar. I can appreciate some of the things that my daughter has gone through.
Holly is a strong and brave person for writing this book and allowing people to have a better understanding of what bipolar individuals may have to go through.
Holly is also my cousin that I lost track of many, many years ago. Since reading her book, I was able to contact her to tell her what a wonderful book it is. Hopefully we will not lose contact for another 45 years or so.
Great job Holly! Wish your parents were here to appreciate the book.

This book has helped me realize what my father's fears were always about when he spoke of Holly, who is my cousin on his side. I believe all physicians, school psycologists and principals should read this book. It would clearly assist in their diagnosis of so-called problem students. I work in a lower-elementary school building and have recommended this wonderful book to a family whose 8 yr. old son was just diagnosed as "bi-polar." He has expressed wanting to commit suicide two or three times and I think Holly's book might help his physicians to try harder to regulate his medications to get this under control.
