Item description for Praying the Lord's Prayer: An Ageless Prayer for Today by Herman C. Waetjen...
Overview Praying the Lord's Prayer intends to make a major contribution to the rehabiltiation of this prayer that Jesus taught his disciples almost two thousand years ago. It does this by establishing a frame of reference from which the Lord's Prayer is to be prayed and by which the meaning of its individual petitions becomes transparent.
Publishers Description The Lord's Prayer is a generic prayer. Its content stipulates no particular time or even at which it should be prayed, but it has been prayed in services of worship and private devotions. Deplorably, however, it has become a petrified tradition, and as a result it is often prayed by rote and without understanding. Many of its individual petitions are misinterpreted or simply incomprehensible. Its meaning, therefore, tends to be inconsequential to those who pray it.Praying the Lord's Prayer intends to make a major contribution to the rehabilitation of this prayer that Jesus taught his disciples almost two thousand years ago. It interprets this ancient prayer by establishing a frame of reference from which it is to be prayed, and the meaning of its individual petitions become transparent. Drawn from the Gospels according to Matthew and Luke, in which the Lord's Prayer is embedded, this frame of reference is the self-understanding of the Christian community as the household of God's adult daughters and sons. It is from this perspective that Jesus' use of the third person imperative in the first three petitions, in contrast to the second person imperative in the remaining petitions, becomes intelligible. An epilogue culminates the book, in which the author offers a version of the Lord's Prayer for the forthcoming future based on his interpretive work.Herman C. Waetjen is Robert S.
