Item description for This Is Your Brain on Joy: A Revolutionary Program for Balancing Mood, Restoring Brain Health, and Nurturing Spiritual Growth by Earl Henslin, Becky Johnson & Daniel G. Amen...
Overview A break-through guide to help people experience lasting joy by restoring brain health.
What does the latest research in brain science and brain imaging say about our ability (or inability) to experience joy and happiness? Is our lack of joy a sin problem or a brain problem? In this life-altering book, Dr. Earl Henslin reveals that to enjoy our lives to the fullest, to become more loving, more Christ-like, we need to become more capable of healing and nourishing our brains. Many problems, long thought of as spiritual in nature--anger, depression, mood swings, anxiety, addictions--are often the result of a sick brain that cannot comprehend a good and loving God. This Is Your Brain on Joy shares exciting new findings in neuroscience that are spirituality sound, showing us how to care for our brains so we not only more effectively use them to glorify God but also experience His love.

Reviews - What do customers think about This Is Your Brain On Joy?
A year after I've read it and I still refer to it May 24, 2010
After seeing a segment of a television program about how to brain effects your joy I was really interested in reading This Is Your Brain on Joy, by Dr. Earl Henslin, and learning more. This book is great read for anyone that has a brain! Henslin takes the reader through each level of the brain, comparing each part to a level of a house which makes it incredibly easy to remember what type of problems over activity in each brain area causes. Then there is a self-test that you can take to figure out what part or parts of your own brain can use some work. Following the test is a chapter on each one. You can read from cover to cover, or read the beginning and skip right to the chapters that will aid in your own health. Henslin provides information on how to maintain and reach a healthy state of brain. He offers great tips on nutrition from medicine and supplements, to food. He also offers great resources for the reader to easily find a professional in their area and get help. I personally know I'll be using the great reasons why naps are good for brain health!
Really, really good book May 22, 2010
This book is a fascinating look inside the brain and why we behave the way we do. It is written in such a way that it is easy for a non-scientific person to understand. It is also practical in that it offers solutions that anyone can implement to offset brain deficiencies.
Don't Miss This is Your Brain On Joy Dec 8, 2009
I have been a fan of Dr. Daniel Amen, of the Amen Clinics for years! When I saw he had written the forward for This Is Your Brain on Joy: A Revolutionary Program for Balancing Mood, Restoring Brain Health, and Nurturing Spiritual Growth and had worked with the author, Dr. Earl Henslin, I knew I had to read it!
Dr. Henslin is a licensed, Christian marriage, family, and child therapist practicing in Southern California. Dr. Henslin was intrigued by the SPECT scans, the incredible new scans of the human brain from the Amen Clinic. After years of study, and working with this technology with patients, Dr. Henslin wrote This is Your Brain on Joy as a guide to help us all work better with the brain we have. The book reads like a fascinating thriller to me. Granted, I am a total geek when it comes to the human body and brain and love books like this.
I dove into this book to my geeky hearts content! Chock full of information, SPECT scans, and real scenarios with patients, This is Your Brain on Joy is an utterly fascinating book for anyone more interested in how to literally build a more joyful brain. It will help you understand yourself, your family and others around you and give you a mountain of practical information that you can try right away.
Start by taking the convenient quiz to figure out where you might be. Then read through to understanding on how to literally build a more satisfying, joyful life. We can be imprisoned within a brain that is not functioning optimally and This is Your Brain on Joy will help you unlock simple, inexpensive things you can do. It was similar to another favorite book, The Mood Cure, by Julia Ros, but went much deeper, along with the added depth of a biblical worldview. Both recommend a combination of a high protein, lower carb diet, with amino acid supplements, vitamins and other low tech things to help your brain. It does discuss prescription medications if needed, along with strategies to improve how your brain functions.Whether you have issues with depression, anxiety, anger, have had a brain injury, or just want a general tune up, This is Your Brain on Joy will help you fine tune the brain God has given you!
I would highly recommend this to anyone who is willing to prayerfully THINK through the book! This is also a fantastic book for homeschooling families - who wouldn't want a more joyful family!
Did You Know Your Brain is Plastic? Oct 14, 2009
Did you know your brain is plastic? That it can actually change with time from what you feed it, say to it, and think? Dr. Henslin, a licensed counselor has worked for years with Daniel G. Amen, MD a pioneer in brain imaging research. In this book he shares what he has learned about "Joy Boosters." These are activities that literally create joy in the brain in ways that change the way the brain physically looks. He breaks these activities into three categories: Creating a joyful brain-stimulating environment, feeding your mind and soul with nourishing thoughts, and feeding it through movement and good food.
Dr. Henslin writes in an easy-to-understand format, and his light-hearted humor shines through. But this is a serious book and an excellent reference for parents, teachers, doctors, counselors, pastors and anyone wanting to learn more about their brain and ways they can "mold" it to literally be full of joy. You can read it cover to cover or simply turn to a section that applies to you or the people you are working with.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about helping people with ADD, ADHD, depression, narcissism, OCD, PTSD and more. Any psychological struggle you can think of is addressed in this book and ways to recognize and treat it. This book helped me understand myself and my son who suffers with bipolar. I have several friends who struggle with clinical depression and I am looking forward to sharing what I have learned about this book with them.

I'm on the 4th chapter as of now and this book has helped me tremendously as a person diagnosed with Schizoaffective/Bipolar II disorder. The knowledge contained in this book has unlocked peace and joy with God. It has livened up my relationship with God and shattered the chains I was in. For those who do not think knowledge is power then you should read this book.
One of the things that science has given us is ways to treat illness and disease. This book by no means dismantles belief in God and I sincerely believe that God gives us great minds and doctors to help us in need. In my personal opinion it is God that has laid the foundation of science and medicine, letting insight and discovery be lead by His Hand.
I find it astonishing that there are believers out there that think there is no place for science in the community. Their God is in a box waiting to be let out and live in fear of their comfort in what they consider to be "truth". If you think God is too small to be taken apart by any man or knowledge then you're living in the wrong universe. Read this book and be prepared to learn some intriguing facts.
