Perfect for Introductory, Junior College and High School Courses May 2, 2007
Excellent for a first look at Forensic Science! This text was created with introductory, Junior College and High School courses in mind. The many branches of forensic science are each touched on and experiments and activities are proposed. This is not the place to find in depth answers to deep forensic questions, but it is a great place to get started in learning about what forensics is and what a forensic scientist does.
A Disappointing Effort From One of the Most Famous Forensic Scientists Jun 23, 2006
Overall the book is a disappointment - basically it has a lot of breadth and no depth. It does cover a wide range of topics; just about every field or discipline of forensice science is covered in the text. However, the chapters lack any real depth (a typical chapter is about 6 pages long with large photos, wide margins and large font size). Much of the chapter is spent explaining how evidence is gathered or processed which isn't necessarily bad, just that it comes at the expense of information on the biology, physiology, chemistry and physics of how the evidence is created and processed. For example, the chapter on fingerprints was 5 pages long, one page of which was a table of methods of visualizing latent fingerprints. There was virtually no mention of the history of fingerprint analysis, how they are formed (genetics vs. physical development in the womb), how latent fingerprints are formed, what components are found in sweat, and only a brief mention of AFIS (not explaining whose prints are in the database, how a search is performed, what is actually being compared and so on) and a brief mention of plastic and visible prints (but not how they are lifted, preserved or enhanced). In short, it's short! This text may be suitable for upper level middle shool or lower level high school students and/or for courses that only intend to broadly survey topics. It is not a textbook that would be useful for upper level high school students or college-aged students. Certainly it wouldn't be appropriate for a course that intends to really delve into topics or fields of forensic science deeply. It isn't even really helpful as an ancillary textbook - other texts I have cover topics in far more depth and detail.
The case studies (when presented) are generally very brief. There are no review questions at the end of the chapters. No exercises, labs or activities are presented in the text. There is no companion website. No references at the end of chapters to books, websites or keystone journal articles (although some of this could be found in the glossary at the end of the book).
Cheap - $45 for a softcover text. The teacher's edition comes with a companion CD that has a few suggested activities or labs, test questions, tips and suggestions and PowerPoints. (Buuuuuut....these are really basic; the PowerPoints are usually only 4-5 slides per chapter, and they are mostly pictures, not summaries of the information, there are usually only about 6 test questions, and they are really basic (e.g. "What does AFIS stand for?") and the activites are generally straightforward - very few advanced activities.)
For a few more dollars there are better textbooks out there. Since this is a first edition, Ihave hopes that it will be beefier in subsequent editions.
