Item description for Sacred Elephant (Naxos Complete Texts) by Heathcote Williams, Heathcote Williams, Caroline Webster & Harry Burton...
"Sacred Elephant" is a moving portrayal of the world's largest land-living mammal. The poem explores the life of elephants in their natural habitat and in captivity, and details their relentless destruction at the hands of man. Evocatively read by the author, the poem is accompanied by a second disc containing a fascinating compilation of facts and figures from elephant history. It is sensitively underscored with classical music.

Older book but still relevant Jun 3, 2005
This is an older copy of this book, written in 1989. It's is an environmental document.
Heathcote's poetic description of the plight of the elephant is beautiful, painful and very accurate. Half of the book is devoted to his ode to the elephant and the second half is devoted to miscellaneous quotes and short texts that are about elephants.
This book was written when the ivory trade was still in full swing and some of the pictures are heartbreaking. There is a lot of historical information. The places in which elephants have lived have been very influenced by their presence. This is a book that must be read to be fully appreciated.
Interesting book - written awhile ago yet the parts about zoos and circuses are still very timely. It's amazing to me that in this day and age people would choose a circus act with live animals in it, and that these magnificent fellow sentient beings are being keep in zoos.
