More About Hazel Dougherty
Author Hazel Dougherty married her husband, Everett, when she was 19 years old. As a married woman determined to do her part, she served as a floor leader at the top-secret Y-12 Plant in Oak Ridge during World War II. Later the couple was active in the Iris Society until 1952 when they organized the Hemerocallis (Daylily) Society in Knoxville, Tennessee. Hazel hybridized and named eight cultivars and won the national President's Cup Award for 1995 for her daylily, Autumn Wood. Hazel received a degree in nursing and also completed several Carson-Newman College Bible courses. She and her husband have helped start new churches, and at the age of 81, Hazel wrote the devotions for the Golden Harvester senior adult monthly newsletter at Grace Baptist Church. She finished her first book, The Good Part, at age 89, though nearly blinded by shingles and long suffering with leukemia.
