More About John Calvin, Emilie Griffin & Elsie Anne McKee

John Calvin

JOHN CALVIN (1509-1564) was perhaps the preeminent theologian of the Reformation. Known best for his Institutes of the Christian Religion, he also wrote landmark expositions on most of the books in the Bible.

Building upon a stream of exact exegesis beginning with the Reformation, MATTHEW HENRY (1662-1714) achieved a standard of applied analysis that has long marked his work as superior. He is best known for his seven-volume commentary on the Bible, which C. H. Spurgeon declared was "rich in analogies . . . superabundant in reflections . . . suitable to everybody, instructive to all."

Alister McGrath (PhD, University of Oxford) is the Andreas Idreos Professor of Science and Religion at the University of Oxford, president of the Oxford Centre for Christian Apologetics, and senior research fellow at Harris Manchester College in Oxford. He is also a noted author and coeditor of Crossway's Classic Commentaries series.

J. I. Packer (DPhil, Oxford University) serves as the Board of Governors' Professor of Theology at Regent College. He is the author of numerous books, including the classic best-seller Knowing God. Packer served as general editor for the English Standard Version Bible and as theological editor for the ESV Study Bible.

Reviews - What do customers think about John Calvin: Selections from His Writings (HarperCollins Spiritual Classics)?

A Good Place to Start  Oct 9, 2005
If you are wanting to understand John Calvin and his theology but are perhaps a little daunted by the size and scope of Calvin's work (e.g. the Institutes, etc.) Then this is a good starting point.

This book is actually an assimilation of Calvin's work. While certainly not exhaustive (which is not its intent), Dillenberger has collected some of the better and more interesting 'parts' or excerpts of Calvin's works in this one volume.

This book actually contains a section of Calvin's 'Institutes,' a portion of his commentary on the Book of Acts, brief sketches of Calvin's view of The Lord's Supper (the Eucharist), one of Calvin's sermons, one of his letters (or rather a reply in letter form of Cardinal Sadolet), a potion of his response to the Council of Trent (very interesting reading), this compilation even includes Calvin's 'Last Will and Testament,' (also very interesting, and much more.

Essentially this work is a 'hodgepodge' of Calvin's overall thought wrapped up in one volume. Once again, while this work is not exhaustive and will only give you taste of Calvin's thought, it is, nonetheless, a great place to begin.

Calvin was a prolific writer and a very strong intellect of the Protestant Reformation, and here is a collection that will demonstrate his impact on Christian thought and theology.

In compiling Calvin's works, Dillenberger has used the standard translators (all considered the best in their work on Calvin) - John T. McNeill and Ford Lewis Battles, Henry Beverage, T.H.L. Parker, etc. So the translations used are top notch.

Overall, this is a wonderful text, and a great introduction to Calvin's thought and theology. The only downfall is the fact that it is 'short pieces' and not complete works, but that should inspire you to track down the works presented in this volume and read and study them further. I highly recommend this compilation.
