Item description for NRSV Standard Bible-Tan/Black HC by Harper Bibles...
Overview The NRSV is one of the most trusted, most accepted, and most accurate translations of the Bible on the market and the only nonsectarian Bible created for all churches, now in a special setting for easy reading.
The New Revised Standard Version is the "standard" translation used by mainline Protestant churches, Orthodox churches, and by many Catholics. The NRSV debuted in 1989 and is owned by the National Council of Churches, which is the leading force for ecumenical cooperation among Christians in the United States representing thirty-five denominations with forty-five million members in more than 100,000 churches across the country. They have chosen HarperCollins to be the exclusive licensor of the translation for the world (nonexclusively in the UK).
The New Revised Standard Version is recognized in scholarly circles as the most accurate translation into English of the original Hebrew and Greek texts. In the tradition of its predecessors, the King James Version and the Revised Standard Version, the NRSV was designed to be the "standard" version for English-speaking people across all denominations, which in many ways it has become. None of the new, more sectarian translations have approached its standards of elegance and accuracy.
This unique one-column setting allows people to read the Bible as work of literature. Each book is introduced with an original wood-cut. Overall, this special easy-to-read setting makes the Bible a wonderful reading experience. It also includes a concordance index to help people find key passages.

More About Harper Bibles
NRSV: The Bible for Everyone
Many of us pay scant attention to the Bible translation we use, and yet we all want the most accurate and readable translation available for our study and devotional use. That Bible translation is the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV). Widely recognized by scholars and religious authorities as the most accurate translation, it is also the direct successor of the beloved King James Bible, following in that Bible’s tradition of elegant, readable prose. As a literal translation rather than a paraphrase, the NRSV leaves interpretation in the hands of the reader. Its groundbreaking use of nonsexist language for generic pronouns—for example, “brothers and sisters” instead of “brothers”—corrects a long-standing problem with English translations of the Bible. Because of a lack of a generic third person singular pronoun, previous translations used “he” or “him” when both men and women were indicated, often obscuring the original meaning.
Created by a committee of scholars from all three branches of the Christian church—Catholic, Protestant, and Orthodox—the NRSV is the least sectarian translation compared to most other popular versions. Further, more denominations have chosen the NRSV as their official translation than any other translation on the market. Trustworthy, readable, and ecumenical, the NRSV is the Bible for everyone.
Whether your Bible needs are academic, vocational, or devotional, Harper Bibles offers an NRSV edition perfect for you.
Reviews - What do customers think about NRSV Standard Bible-Tan/Black HC?
A confirmation class Bible Jan 7, 2008
In recent days, it's been harder and harder to find the "just right" translation of the scriptures. When I was asked to organize my church's confirmation class, I set out to find the translation that would work the best for kids who were trying to gain ownership of their faith. The NRSV did the trick, and this new edition from Harper is the best! It's durable enough to keep up with a caving trip, and very easy to read. The kids love it too. This bible comes with my fullest recommendation.
Poor paper choice is the Achille's heel Jul 10, 2007
My reviews frequently berate publishers for poor choices, and this one is no different.
First, the NRSV is a very useful and durable translation. I wish someone would put out a great edition with text only, single column, warm and readible. You would think such a task would be easily accomplished...
This Bible had a lot of promise: great print size and clarity, single column format, great binding and cover. Then you check out the PAPER- cheap, cheap, cheap! Totally transparent, taking all of the joy out of reading. You can literlly see the printing on the next sheet! Nothing but shadowing.
I saww it at the store and didn't buy it. If the publisher put out the exact same layout with quality onion skin paper, I would buy it at twice the price.
NRSV Standard Bible May 9, 2007
This hardback Bible has a smooth black and tan leather-like binding that feels very nice in the hand. The wood-cut pictures are very attractive and the print is larger than in most regular-print Bibles and of a very readable font. There are helpful subject headings. The Bible lies flat when open. The concordance in the back is helpful, but not exhaustive.
My one complaint is with the pages. The paper is quite thin, and the print can been seen through them, especially the book titles and wood-cut pictures, which are dark enough to obscure the print on the other side of the page. The outer edges of the pages also curl upward instead of lying flat, which makes turning to a particular passage difficult.
I am glad to see publishers finally trying to print decent looking NRSV Bibles. This one is an improvement over most, but could have been better with different paper and perhaps a soft, flexible cover instead of hardback.
Almost-perfect edition of a well-regarded version of the Bible Mar 11, 2007
This is an exquisite edition of the New Revised Standard Version of the Christian Scriptures, a scholarly translation which seeks to render the Bible in contemporary English. The paper is highest quality Bible-paper, and the print larger than most bibles of this size. The binding is both attractive and durable. Were it not for the less-than-optimal print darkness (it is a bit light on the thin paper), I would consider it a five-star offering. As it is, it is still the most appealing edition of this version I have seen.
Each book of the bible is set-off by a wood-cut design unique to that book. If you are looking for a good-quality, easy to read Protestant edition of this translation (the companion Harper Catholic NRSV is equally attractive, with the books ordered as in the Roman Catholic tradition), this is one to consider. (Buyers should know this is not a "study bible" editon, as it has no notes other than minor footnotes on textual variants. For a full study edition of this version, see either the HarperCollins Study Bible or the New Oxford Annotated Bible).
