Item description for The Little Pond by Waller Harold...
Norton on Tees is a sleepy little village in rural England, the residents of which seem to be rather wealthy, yet rather idle. Or are they . . . One of the affable elderly residents, the Honourable Harry Porteous spends most of his time waylaying unsuspecting passers-by with accounts of local history and the like. Well practiced at his craft, Harry corners Andrew Dunbar-a newcomer to the town-and regales him with a far-fetched tale of little substance. Intrigued somewhat though, Andrew decides to cash in on the apparent wealth in the community, and opens an employment agency. Nothing is quite as it seems and Andrew is becoming more and more aware of strange occurrences in the village. He discovers that Honourable Harry is the leader of a motley crew of ex-crims, who have returned to their former 'fields of expertise' to boost coffers. Thus suitably engaged, the 'syndicate' members reform, resuming their handiwork. All is going to plan until mysteriously, some of the members experience certain mishaps and inconveniences-like murder. Meanwhile, Harry is experiencing his own problems, his father passes away leaving Harry with a title, but a load of debt. How on earth will he ever pay the millions of pounds owed by his father's estate? How indeed . . .
