Item description for The Lord Is My Shepherd: Healing Wisdom of the Twenty-third Psalm by Harold S. Kushner...

The author of When Bad Things Happen to Good People reflects on beloved words of the Twenty-third Psalm, revealing its role as a source of courage, wisdom, and inspiration for generations of Christians and Jews. 150,000 first printing.

Publishers Description

From the author of the best-selling When Bad Things Happen to Good People and Living a Life That Matters-a new book of practical spirituality, of inspiration and encouragement gleaned from what may be the best-known and best-loved chapter in the Bible: the Twenty-third Psalm.
"The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want." So begins the psalm that, for millennia, has been a source of comfort in grief and of courage in fear. Now Harold Kushner discovers what it has to teach us about living our day-to-day lives. Each chapter discusses one line of the psalm in the context of both the time when it was written and the present day, and illuminates the life lessons contained within it. For example, Kushner shows us that the phrase "My cup runneth over" is a declaration of our gratitude for what life has given us and a rejection of the envy we may feel for what others have. And he draws on the ideas and thoughts of various spiritual figures-from G. K. Chesterton to Martin Buber to Paul Tillich-to further expand our understanding of this great psalm and help us benefit from its everyday spiritual wisdom.

Reviews - What do customers think about The Lord Is My Shepherd: Healing Wisdom of the Twenty-third Psalm?

Beautiful Book by Rabbi Kushner  Jan 9, 2007
This is a beautiful and thought-provoking work by Harold Kushner. I've recommended it to many people and have given it as gifts to others. Well worth the money and something you will probably want to read more than once. The book on cd is great also.
Excellent way to understand this psalm  Jan 20, 2006
If you believe in God from a Christian or Jew perspective, you can be enlightened and delighted with this thorough explanation of the psalm and benefit from taking the posture the psalmist(s) had when writing it. I have listened to this psalm throughout my whole life and never had the opportunity to fully see all that may be found in its deep meaning. It is amazing all can be expanded from these simple phrases.
I usually love Harold Kushner's way of explaining spiritual material (Must read: "When Bad Things Happen to Good People", "Living a Life that Matters" and "How Good do We Have to Be") because, although his main point of view is a religious one, even if you don't believe or don't even want to think about these points of view, you can still get the full message, get a wise vision of life, adversity, the laws of nature, reality, joy, ethics, reaching for self fulfillment and integrity, etc. But, I must repeat, in order to enjoy and benefit from this book, I think you must believe in God because this one is much more religious than the other books I mentioned from the same author. If you want to understand what may be in the depths of the psalm and don't really care about feeling peace or living according to it, go ahead and read the book because it gives an interesting way of understanding what religion may provide or wants to give.
A book to reread frequently  Nov 8, 2005
One of the most wonderful things about Rabbi Kushner's writings is that he isn't afraid to tackle the hard questions. If we indeed have a Shepherd, why isn't He doing a better job? To this question, Kushner says, "the psalmist would teach us to see the world, without illusions that nothing bad will ever happen, but without the fear that we will be utterly destroy This is a lovely book full of hope and wisdom.

Drawing on the individual lines of the Twenty-Third Psalm, Rabbi Kushner (known best for his book Why Bad Things Happen to Good People) creates 15 essays that are thought-provoking and inspiring. He outlines the historical background of the words of the psalm, noting "The earliest ancestors of the Hebrew People who gave us the Bible were nomads, owning no property, bound to no one location but traveling with their flocks and herds wherever there was pastureland for the animals to graze on." The analogy of God to a shepherd makes perfect sense in that environment. The beauty of the analogy is that it still speaks to us today. The image which is evoked is one of caring and greater knowledge.
ed by the things that do happen."

Kushner is skilled at relating Biblical literature to questions and concerns of today. He relates the verse to terrorists, Einstein and daily living. He provides insights and advice as to how we can live our lives more effectively. His words also provide hope to all of us:

"You may have to work hard to earn your living...But you don't have to work hard in order to feel good about yourself. All you have to do is stop striving, relax, and say to yourself, I feel good about who I am."

This slim volume will stay in a handy place in my home for years to come. It's a book I will come back to again and again for wisdom, courage and peace.
Deep and heartfelt insights  Aug 28, 2005
I wasn't expecting much from this book when I picked it up. Beloved though its subject might be, how much can you say about a 15-line bit of verse - the 23rd Psalm ? But Rabbi Harold Kushner uses his compassion and intellect to unpack each line. Though informed by scholarship, this is not a dry scholarly exercise. Kushner uses each line as jumping-off point for a sermon on human v. divine nature, arguing that the heart of faith is not just believing in God, or thinking that God will fix our problems, but in feeling the assurance that God is present and hears us. To Kushner, comfort comes not from an assurance that God will save us from evil, but that with God we are never alone.

Along the way, we are treated to Kushner's insights about the Pieta, creative misinterpretations of Scripture, and a heavy dose of practical psychology, as gleaned from his own community and his audiences. The experience of his own son's death 20 years ago (of progeria, a rare genetic disorder that causes rapid aging and premature death) hangs over the entire work. Like the biblical Job, Kushner has wrestled with the meaning of death and how we can relate to God in the midst of death and suffering. Kushner's conclusions may challenge the easy answers grasped by some people of faith. But there is no doubt that he has walked through the valley of the shadow and emerged wiser and closer to God.

Kushner's reading of his own work (on the audio CD) is gentle, fatherly and soothing -- a glimpse into a soul full of holiness. A wonderful gift for any thoughtful Jew or Christian.
The Lord is My Shepherd  Aug 15, 2005
Once again, Kushner brings his deep pastoral sensitivity to bear on poetry, literary structure and theology in this much loved psalm. His writing style is gentle and accessible to all, as he reflects on the Twenty-Third Psalm.
