Item description for Light of the Word: Brief Reflections on the Sunday Readings by Hans Urs Von Balthasar...
Overview It is not only the Catholics who attend Sunday Mass, but also the priests who preach at Mass who feel overwhelmed by the three scripture readings in which for the most part only the first from the Old Testament and the third from the Gospel have any interconnection, while the second from the apostolic letters stands by itself. This book seeks to present the common theses that connect all three of the readings for Sundays and feasts of the Lord in the three year cycle of readings. The reflections here are meant to be theological and spiritual suggestions that the one who is preaching can develop further and from which he can select individperspectives. Rather than seeking immconcrete applications, Fr. von Balthasar attempts to elucidate the content which is immediately present in the passages. these reflections are meant to be theological and spiritual suggestions that the one who is preaching can develop further and from which he can select individual perspectives. Organized by each Sunday and feast day of thediately.

Reviews - What do customers think about Light of the Word: Brief Reflections on the Sunday Readings?
Brief Kernals of Wisdom Aug 23, 2007
Reading this book after mass on Sunday when I am at home reflecting on the three readings from scripture I understand why Balthasar was one of the leading theologians of the past century. Each reading is given a paragraph or two, and Balthasaar, in that limited space is able to enlighten and deepen your understanding of that particular reading and its relation to the other two.The book is set out to cover every sunday in the A B C three year cylce. There is also a handy scripture index if you need to find a reflection on a particular passage.

Hans Urs von Balthasar has writtrn an extremely useful book. It is structured as follows: For each Sunday of the year, for each cycle (A,B,C), von Balthasar provides a brief reflection. (By brief I mean a page or two.) Too brief? It depends on what you want. If you want a quick an insightful unpacking of the kernel of the readings, you will not be disappointed. The author's erudition does not get into the way of his lucidity. Heck, even I can understand what he's saying. This book would be useful for someone who wants to reflect on the Sunday Mass readings, or even as a catalyst for the homily manufacturing process. My copy -- only a few years old -- is already dilapitated.
