Item description for Christology by Hans Schwarz & Schwarz Hans...
Overview A unique blend of biblical scholarship, the history of doctrine, and current theological inquiry. Schwarz makes a compelling case for a full understanding of the person and work of Christ in thoughtful give-and-take with reductionisms ancient and modern. As the fruit of decades of teaching the subject on two continents, this work will prove to be a durable contribution to the field.
Publishers Description Books on the historical Jesus abound in both the scholarly market and the popular press. Few of these recent studies, however, draw on the entire witness of Scripture and tradition when engaging the contemporary debate over the meaning and significance of Jesus of Nazareth. Bringing together both the pursuit of the historical Jesus and the systematic exposition of the Christ of faith, Hans Schwarz here presents a solid historical and biblical introduction to Christology that demonstrates the relevance of Jesus for today. After surveying the history of New Testament scholarship and exploring the biblical testimony itself, Schwarz restates important Christological themes in ways that connect them with present-day concerns. Schwarz includes in his discussion his own proposal for constructing a Christology "from below" that also takes seriously the resurrection. Clear and well organized, this volume is an excellent resource for discussing Christological themes within the context of today's historically oriented academy.

Reviews - What do customers think about Christology?
An excellent overview! May 23, 2001
Mr. Schwarz has written a good summary of the field of Christology. Not something that is easily done.
He opens the book by defining the Christological problem that has plagued Christians for many centuries; how is the Jesus of earth related with the Christ of faith?
Hans then moves through important and historical thinkers on the subject. This section of the book is a little dry, but still worth the read.
Finally, Hans launches into his own interpretation of Christology. I found his outlook on the subject and very readable.
If you are interested in the subject of Christology, I would highly recommend this book.
Theologically solid and readable Christology--excellent Feb 11, 2000
This text on Christology provides an extensive and well informed overview of the history of doctrinal thought on Jesus of Nazareth up to and including modern theological considerations. It is very readable, especially for a translation from German. In this age when people calling themselves "Christians" deny Christ, Schwarz's text is very much needed. Every modern Christian should read and digest the information and arguments presented in this book.
