Reviews - What do customers think about Overlook Much, Correct a Little: 99 Sayings by John XXIII (99 Words to Live By)?
Overlook Much Aug 23, 2007
With this book, you definitely have to "overlook much." First of all, there are not 99 sayings by John XXIII, there are only 98 because one "saying" takes two pages. The sayings themselves are very revealing of this amazing man - his simplicity, his prayer, his relationship with God, with himself, with others. I was disappointed that not all the sayings identify the original source, including when during his life he wrote them; I would have found that helpful. I also wondered about the fidelity of the translations: I assume that the original works by John were written in either Latin or Italian, then translated into German in 2000 for the German publication and then into English in 2007 for the English publication. That said, there are gems here that make the book worthwhile.
A warm and inspirational collection reflecting the spirit of the "Good Pope John". Jul 9, 2007
Part of the 99 Words To Live By series, Overlook Much Correct Little: 99 Sayings by John XXIII is a giftbook collection of memorable quotes by Angelo Roncalli, known to the world as Pope John XXIII (1881-1963). Charm, piety, and down-to-earth good humor distinguish these words and their gentle trust in the providence of God. "The believer is never fearful. He or she is not a pessimist. Faith is the serenity that comes from God." A warm and inspirational collection reflecting the spirit of the "Good Pope John".
Simple Charm Apr 27, 2007
Editor Hans-Peter Rothlin introduces Overlook Much, Correct a Little with a reminder that John XXIII was a man of the people, conquering hearts with his simple charm, his trust in God, and his good humor. This pocket-sized hard cover, like the others in the 99 Sayings series, is an ideal gift for self and others, perfect for carrying along or keeping on a bedside table.
An extended example of the late pope's simple charm is contained in the book's longest entry; the two-page prayer titled "Just for Today." In it, John speaks of correcting and improving only himself, not others; doing something for which he has no taste; drawing up an exact schedule; and devoting 10 minutes to spiritual reading "as the body needs food so too my soul needs spiritual reading." His humor shows through in such statements as "This is certain: to the one who trusts only in him, the Lord gives the right attire for every kind of weather."
