Light and Fun! Nov 30, 2009
I lean more toward books that are not heavy with drama, but fun, romantic and a good read. That's what I found in this book. I read it once a year. Very cute; spunky; adventurous and just plain enjoyable.
Wholesome and fun! Oct 30, 2009
Although this is not great literature, it is a good read. If you like wholesome romance novels, you will love this book.
A lighthearted, very enjoyable easy reading book Jul 29, 2009
First, I have to say that I love Cathy Marie Hake she is an a lighthearted, witty author that I enjoy reading. Often some of the books I read get a bit sad or depressing and where I can enjoy them and the message they bring to me, she definitely counter-balances this and I appreciate this very, very much! Fancy Pants was true to form as an easy read book that I enjoyed very much. It starts out with this very young 17 year old girl, Lady Sydney, soon to be referred to as "Fancy-Pants", who has lost so much, both her parents are gone, her father very recently, and she comes all the way over to America to hopefully marry this man only to find out he is a jerk of all times. She is desperate and realizes that the only choice she has is to contact her uncle that she has never met. Uncle Fuller come to find out who owns a very successful ranch in partnership with "Big Tim" both have been hurt in the past and frankly want nothing to do with "females". Uncle Fuller, had lost touch with Sydney's mother and didn't realize that Syndey is a girl and he thinks that he has a nephew and invites "him" to come stay awhile. Syndey slips out from under her soon-to-be husband who wants to marry her for status only, a decides the only way she can travel is by disguising herself as a boy, this has some very cute moments. Especially when she gets to the ranch and Big Tim wants to make a "MAN" out of her before Uncle Fuller sets his eyes on her! You can only imagine how upset he is when he finds out he is a she and he has been dupped! It all would totally fall apart except for the love of a very loyal housekeeper, Velma who realized that Sydney was a she a LONG time ago ... and stood up for her when it all came down. As the story unfolds it continues to be cute and enjoyable. If you are looking for a lighthearted, enjoyable story ... then this is another one of Cathy Marie Hake's books you should enjoy reading! Not for the depth of the character, but just for the enjoyment of reading this book!
Heartwarming & Enjoyable Jul 17, 2009
I found this book to be very sweet and heartwarming. The characters are written well, and made me smile at some points. The plot line is good although a bit rushed in the end. Altogether a great book!
The story is about Lady Sydney Hathwell. Raised in a very rich, cultivated society Sydney travels to America to meet a man who has asked permission to marry her. When she arrives, she finds him cold and rude. While he is away Sydney decides to go to live with her Uncle whom she has never met. When she receives her uncle's letter in reply, he assumes she is boy and so she decides to dress like a boy so that her Uncle will continue to want her. When she arrives her uncle is not only gone for several weeks, he has also left in charge "Big Tim" the man determined to make "Syd" into a man! Through all the hard work Sydney learns many lessons, and finally her disguise has been discovered. Will Sydney be able to stay at her Uncle's Ranch? Will Time ever see her for who she is and realize that she loves him?
One part I thought were a little questionable about this book, was when Sydney is still pretending to be a boy and is at the saloon with the "Soiled Doves". Granted, this was the only place she could take a bath without people knowing about her disguise, but I did not like that she had to pretend that she had used their "services". I understand that she was not saved yet, but I am surprised she would have considered it proper, even when pretending to be a boy!
I also did not like the rushed ending as I mentioned before. I felt that the "bad guy" of the story, the man Sydney traveled to America for, gave up way to easy in the end. He had spent 6 months tracking her only give in in the end. It would have been far more interesting if he had put up more of a fight!
I know some people don't like Christian Fiction to sound preachy, but I am the opposite. I enjoy learning from the books I read and Cathy Marie Hake's books have that quality! From little life lessons throughout the book to Tim giving Sydney the Salvation message, this book has some wonderful spiritual qualtities to it!
