Item description for Hints To Hunters, Sportsmen And Travellers On Dress, Equipment, and Camp Life (Big Game Hunting / Safari Series) (Big Game Hunting / Safari Series) by H.A. Levenson ("The Old Shekarry")...
Originally published in 1874 as "Wrinkles or Hints to Sportsmen", this rare early work is both expensive and very hard to find in its first edition. READ COUNTRY BOOKS have republished it, using the original text and photographs. The author was a well known and much travelled big game hunter and sportsman. He was also responsible for other much sought after sporting titles such as, "The Forest and the Field," "Sport in Many Lands," "Hunting Grounds of the Old World," etc. During his hunting trips abroad he made many notes regarding the best sporting equipment and arms required for use in various countries. These formed the basis for this entertaining and important historical record, which will prove of great interest to all who travel or hunt, with the four detailed and illustrated chapters on arms and ammunition being of particular appeal to 'Gun Buffs'. The book's two hundred and ninety four pages consist of eleven sections:- Upon Dress. - The Equipment of a Traveller and Sportsman. - Sporting Arms. - Military Arms. - On the Selection of Arms. - Practical Hints on the Use of the Rifle. - Tents and Encampments. - Hints to Travellers. - Hints to Sportsmen. - Hints to Naturalists with Directions for Collecting and Preserving Specimens. - The Forest and the Mountains. Each chapter is well illustrated with black and white drawings and engravings of arms and equipment, etc. This hitherto rare and unusual book can be thoroughly recommended for inclusion in the library of all sporting and travel enthusiasts or historians. Many of the earliest sporting books, particularly those dating back to the 1800s, are now extremely scarce and very expensive. READ COUNTRY BOOKS are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.

A wonderful look into the nuts and bolts of 1870's safaris Mar 17, 2007
If you are into the nuts and bolts of "How did they do it back then?" then "Hints to Hunters" is an excellent source. It is especially useful due to its relatively early original publication date (1874) and its many illustrations, many more than are usually in similar books of the time. Levenson is indeed opinionated on subjects such as equipment and methods but find me an outdoorsman past or present who isn't. It was also interesting to see how the lads across the Great Pond were doing things in Africa and India while we Yanks were on the Great Plains. This book will show you the similarities and differences. My only real complaint was that at $45 it was a tad pricey. Fortunately, I had an this site Certificate.
