Item description for The Density of the Present: Selected Writings by Gustavo Gutierrez...
Overview Gutierrez has a great deal to say to the North American church. He writes from a continent where 60 percent of the population lives in "poverty" or "extreme poverty," and in a country where assasination of priest, bishops and other believers is far too common. This volume addresses the Vatican's teaching on work and poverty, the journey of the Latin American church, and the relationship between theology and the church. Throughout his writing he addresses the question of how we must speak of God in a world of suffering. Gutierrez argues that we must see libertation and freedom from poverty and oppression as real images of the Kingdom of God, which has yet to arrive in its fullness.
Publishers Description Part One includes reflections on Pope John Paul II's encyclical on work as well as an overview of a century of Catholic social teaching in relation to the "option for the poor." In Part Two, Gutierrez examines the journey of the church in Latin America, including the landmark bishops' meeting in Medellin, Colombia (1968), the more recent bishops' meeting in Santo Domingo (1992), the meaning of the fifth centenary of the conquest of the Americas, and the challenge of liberation theology. In Part Three, he takes up the relationship between spirituality and theology, the function of theology within the church, and the critical question of how to talk about God in a world of suffering.
