Item description for Gender and Agricultural Supply Responses to Structural by Grace Atieno Ongile...
Studies on the structural adjustment and agricultural sector reform in Africa have generally neglected the gender implications of the market reform process. For both equity and efficiency reasons, such neglect is difficult to justify or sustain. This study uses a ten-year longitudinal survey achieved by building on empirical material first generated in 1985-86, and attempts a follow up survey in 1995-96, to remedy the gap in knowledge, by capturing the gender implications of agricultural sector reform in contemporary Kenya. With this aim, the author focuses on smallholder tea production. The object is to pinpoint factors that influence the adoption of tea among male and female farmers. Ongile assesses the perceptions of the changes that have taken place in living standards held by female farmers over the research period, and suggests appropriate policy reforms to ensure that women's interests are taken more fully into account in the design of agricultural sector reforms.
