A simple story of an amazing deaf-blind woman Oct 29, 2009
Georgia Griffith was my friend. We met online in Compuserve forums, where I became a top sysop for her. We worked together for about 13 years.
Georgia tells her life story in this little book, how she went blind at an early age, overcame that to go to school and major in music, only to lose her hearing as well in college. This is not a great work of literature at all, but a simply written and very heartfelt remembrance of things which happened in her life, and how she coped.
It would be of most interest to those thousands of people who participated in her forums and/or who knew her as family and friends, as it is full of ancedotes about them; but anyone who wonders how someone both deaf and blind thinks and acts will enjoy this little book.
Georgia was a remarkable woman, who achieved more than most sighted and hearing folks. She received major awards and was often called 'the Helen Keller of the Internet'. It certainly is an inspirational story, a tale of overcoming one obstacle after another in order to bring meaning and substance into her life.
Georgia died of a stroke a few years ago at around age 66 (if I remember correctly), but we will miss her for a long time.
