Item description for Reading Scripture As the Word of God: Practical Approaches and Attitudes by George Martin...
Overview This book is about READING Scripture, and reading it as God's word addressed to us. This is a practical book, intended to help those who wish to begin reading Scripture, or want to mature in their understanding of Scripture. It focuses on our using Scripture to grow in the Christian life, and on the way that God addresses his word to us through the words of Scripture. Part 1 provides practical suggestions for reading Scripture, for growing in understanding what we read, for listening to the word of God speak to us through Scripture, and for using Scripture in our prayer. Part 2 is concerned with how God reveals himself to us through the words of Scripture. It discusses how we should approach Scripture as the word of God spoken to us in human words, and how Scripture reveals God himself to us, forming us into his people. Part 3 takes up topics and questions that arise once we begin reading Scripture. We will have good days and bad days; we will sometimes be baffled by problems of interpretation; we will often experience the power of God's word: all this is a part of remaining faithful to daily reading and abiding in God's word. This 4th edition adds a Postscript and a Study Guide. The author read Scripture and wrote this book from within the Roman Catholic tradition, but he believes that what he has written is true and valid for every Christian who would read Scripture as the Word of God.
