Item description for Bringing the Gospel of Matthew to Life: Insight and Inspiration (Opening the Scriptures) by George Martin...
Overview Biblical commentator George Martin has dedicated his career to showing Catholics how to read Scripture as the word of God. His easy to understand, verse-by-verse exposition of the Gospel of Matthew helps readers grasp not only the author's original meaning, but also what god is saying to his people today. This book features: *Background sections, with fascinating details relating to the history, geography, and culture of Palestine, along with definitions of the root meaning words used by Matthew; *References to and quotations of parallel passages in the Old and New Testament; *Reflection questions that provide opportunities to pray over Matthew's words and apply his teaching to our lives. The author's writing is sound and well-researched, but popular rather than academic, so it enables readers to study and pray through Matthew at the same time.

Wonderful Exposition of Matthew Oct 21, 2008
George Martin has done it again -- a wonderfully readable verse-by-verse examination of the Gospel of Matthew. George has the rare gift of being able to take scholarly research (he is a Ph.D.)and present it in a reader-friendly way without ever talking down to the reader. I also recommend his previous book in this series on the Gospel of Mark.
Review of Martin's book Aug 8, 2008
I like anything written by George Martin. I have purchased both of his books on the gospels. I am waiting for him to write one on Luke and another on John. He has a tremendous way of making the scriptures applicable to the 21st century by bringing out meanings that I have not thought of before. I like the way he includes the text of the gospel in his book along with the comments.
