Reviews - What do customers think about A Biblical Theology of the Doctrines of Sovereign Grace: Exegetical Considerations of Key Anthropological, Hamartiological, and Soteriological Terms and Motifs?

Amazing Biblical Examination.  Dec 21, 2008
If you're reading this review, you're already in what's likely the smallest sub-set of Christianity there is; the educated side of conservative evangelicalism. I'm likely already preaching to the choir in a huge way, but if you've noticed how hacks and nutcases always seem to "go to the Greek" for supporting some strange idea, you'll know how around 95% of PASTORS do wretched word-study and lexicographical work. Most don't kow the biblical languages, and if they do they only have a semester or two of them and don't remember much. Yet still, I always hear things like "this word in Greek is" and then a pastor quotes the form in the passage (as opposed to the lexical form), fudges the pronounciation, and then proceeds onto either a totality transfer fallacy (shoving every meaning of a word into the passage and then cherry-picking whatever one suits for whatever they want to say) or a false semantic isolation fallacy (choosing one "meaning" for the term out of a broader semantic range and applying that single "meaning" to every occurance of the term).

This book is the exact opposite of ALL of that. Zemek is an astounding scholar and amazing biblical linguist. He's taught languages and exegesis for decades at the seminary level and this book reflects his decades of study. He works through all the relevant terms to a doctrinal point (in both Hebrew and Greek) and builds up a comprehensive, exegetically driven understanding of both specific terms and broader concepts (i.e. "forgiveness" or "grace"). Where other more popular books are popcorn theology and candy-corn exegesis, this book is a heaping plate of meat and potatoes.

Zemek is now the undisputed king of word studies, at least in my book. He takes a great and thoroughly biblical look at soteriology, hamartiology and anthropology without leaving any stone unturned. His biblical definitions are from VERY comprehensive study, and I hope he writes on more issues!

If you find this review (by the grace of God) and love learning about the Lord (and hopefully aren't afraid of a little Hebrew and Greek), you need to purchase everything you can from George Zemek. He's like the anti-Osteen.
