Reviews - What do customers think about Rome & Constantinople: Pope Paul VI & Metropolitan Meliton of Chalcedon?
Lessons Aug 23, 2008
Extraordinary indeed, this little book by Metropolitan Athanasios of Helioupolis about the rapprochement between Pope Paul VI and Metropolitan Meliton of Chalcedon, which is to say, between Rome and Orthodoxy, is a little treasure. Graced with a cover picture of a poignant artistic expression of Paul VI's dramatic actions of humility in the presence of Metropolitan Meliton, the kissing of his feet by the Roman pontiff, Rome and Constantinople goes beyond the externals to reveal the presence of willing hearts and minds in the pursuit of union. Meliton claimed he had been afforded "the presence of a saint" in meeting with the Pope, and who can dispute his characterization? The Curia had its reservations, as have Roman traditionalists for many years, but the uncommon beauty and fragility of Pope Paul VI's heart triumphs, full of reconciliation and trust, and this little book succeeds in making an obscure moment of spiritually grand proportions something understandable and admirable. Easily worth the money, and definitely worth a read. Little book - big recommendation.
