Item description for The Disciple-Making Church: In the 21st Century by Gary E. Tangeman...
Overview "I know I'm reading a good book when I begin to look for my highlighter pen to remember significant points. I grabbed for it when I started the first chapter and used it throughout the book. "This book is a winner. Gary approaches his subject from a rich background of personal experience, exhaustive research, and a forceful writing style. I found myself continuously challenged as I read the book."--Dr. Norm Wakefield--Associate Professor of Ministry, Phoenix Seminary

Reviews - What do customers think about The Disciple-Making Church: In the 21st Century?
Not great Nov 16, 2009
I'm not sure I understand the other reviewer--she seems a bit upset about this book and a perceived "selling out to culture" contained within. I agree with her that this book is not helpful; it's dated, and it is overly dependent upon a false view of discipleship. Tangeman rarely provides original thought or information--this book reads like a summary of everyone else's work.
Avoid this book unless your grade depends on it; in that case, read it as quickly as possible to get it over with.
heresy abounds Dec 1, 2008
This reviewer strongly recommends these books as a biblical response to the corrupt errors presented in Tangeman's book: This Little Church Went to Market: The Church in the Age of Entertainment by Gary Gilley and Ashamed of the Gospel: When the Church Becomes Like the World by John F. MacArthur Jr.
This book offers worldly marketing strategies to misdirect blind and confused shepherds who want to populate their churches with unconverted goats ("Thus says the LORD: "Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength- Jeremiah 17:5a). It is full of ample quotes from well-known false "Christian" teachers and even includes New Age teachings, as well! The book is loaded with incomplete or severely twisted versions of scripture (2Peter3:16-18), produces false assumptions and conclusions/teachings from scripture (2Timothy3:3-4), denies the sufficiency of scripture (Hebrews4:12-13,2Timothy3:16-17), denies God's sovereign role in the choosing and the building of His Church (Matthew16:18, John15:16), and promotes the anti-Christ agenda of ecumenical "love-based unity" (Luke 12:49-53) while completely lacking the power of the real Gospel (Romans1:16) granted by the real Jesus Christ, yes there are counterfeits (Matthew24:4-5), that brings about the real Faith that has been delivered once for all to the saints (Jude3)which the true children of God will contend for. May God have mercy on the author Gary Tangeman for publishing his unbiblical (although popular in some liberal circles) ideas the scriptures label as "doctrines of demons" (1Timothy4:1-2), and grant him genuine grace (Titus2:11-14) to repent for leading people away from truth, as well as for asserting God's awesome glory could ever possibly be improved upon or "enhanced", as he so termed in his book, as if any of God's ineffable, perfect attributes are lacking. His people-pleasing schemes (Galatians1:10) might fill some church pews, but they won't be the true means by which individuals are saved from everlasting condemnation. True faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God (Romans10:17)-- so be warned! "For false christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. See, I have told you beforehand." (Matthew 24:24-25). Man's methods and agendas will fail. Anyone following the leadership of this deceived author will find themselves utterly fooled in the end. This book provides a fine example of how lovely the the imposters can appear while posing to be ministers of light. Spurgeon said that to use biblical discernment is not the ability to be able to tell what is right from what is wrong, but rather the ability to tell what is true from what is almost true! Almost is not good enough! There is only ONE Truth, ONE Way, ONE Name, by which men may be saved. Gary Tangeman's book offers a mere version of these, but lacks the real thing.
