Item description for Roemische Glaser des Landesmuseums Mainz by Gabriele Harter...
The significance of the Mainz Landesmuseums collection of Roman glass lies, on the one hand, in the great variety of the forms, colours and techniques which are represented, and on the other hand, in the fact that the pieces belonging to the period between the early 1st and late 4th/early 5th centuries A.D. come predominantly from the area of Mogontiacum, military garrison and the seat of the provincial government of Germania superior. In Romische Glaser des Landesmueums Mainz all of the 1364 objects in this important collection are, for the first time, compiled in a single catalogue. It defines a total of 124 different types of vessels and miscellaneous objects, and includes a report on the current state of research into general dating, distribution, manufacturing methods and use. The book also includes an introductory essay on the collections history, as well as on the history and topography of Mogontiacum, detailed glossaries, a compilation of 83 Roman graves containing glass from Mainz and Rheinhessen, and finally, a survey of the glass forms and decorations found at Roman Mainz, divided according to period. German text.
